Beginning of the end in Philly

08:15 AM ET 05.24 | The Phillies did end a four-game losing streak, which had Charlie Manuel confident in catching the Nationals this season, but, wihtout Ryan Howard and Chase Utley in the lineup, there are doubters in Philadlephia. I'm not ready to bury the last-place Phillies, but put it this way: I will not be surprised if this is the beginning of the end. The season is little more than one-quarter complete. Your eyes can deceive you at this time of year, or, heck, even in September. ... It still is too early to count out such a proud, competitive group. On the other hand, who can predict with any confidence, much less certainty, that the Phillies will recover?

but ... I do have an itch ...

Predictable story.

Nope. The Phils will recover. They still have the best front three in a rotation in MLB, Howard is on the way, and a GM who will make moves. They're okay.

That is why they play 162 games. You are going to have winning and losing periods throughout the season. The Phils may not win the division but I think they will make the playoffs and you remember what happen last year.

The Phillies are missing the entire right side of their infield and are still only 4.5 games out of first. The guys are pressing at the plate trying to make up for Howard and Utley's absence. Will Howard (when he gets back) and Utley (if he gets back) be the same players they were in years past? Probably not, but their presence in the line-up will help to calm some the other guys down at the plate and let them be more productive. Chooch, Pence and Victorino aren't the guys they want carrying the team on their back. That's Howard & Utleys job. They other guys should be getting on base to let the "big guns" knock them in. Right now all the Phils need to do is stay within striking distance of 1st and get healthy. A hot run through August and September carried them to a WS win in 2008 and took them back to the WS in 2009.

Is there reason for concern in Philly right now? Yes.

Are the Phillies done? Far from it...

There's FAR too much time left to declare anyone dead. With the lineups they've had to put on the field, to be onlt 4.5 games out is simply amazing. The NL East is far-improved, which means the teams will all hold each other close. That being said, I would have thought these articles would be typed on computers equipped with spell-checkers by now.

I'm thinkin' that as long as Philly has Halladay, Lee and Hamels then they're not too far off. 4-1/2 back is not so hard to overcome at this point in the season.

Nope, not at all.

Halladay needs to settle down, **** needs to stop piszing off umps and mumbles needs to figure out how to get some offense instead of just being offensive

The Phils had their day in 2008. Since the 2010 playoff loss to the Giants the Phils have been shown to be a good team but not a championship team.

They will come around, right now there fighting success!!!

Phillies will just have to learn baseball like the Giants...
