Will NFL betting kill Super Bowl in New Jersey?

08:46 AM ET 05.26 | New Jersey wants to give it a try. Governor Chris Christie said Thursday that sports wagering will arrive at New Jersey horse racing tracks and Atlantic City casinos later this year. The NFL almost certainly will file suit to stop it. "Legalized sports gambling beyond where it already existed is prohibited," NFL spokesman Greg Aiello told Dan Wetzel of Yahoo! Sports. The difference this time around is that two NFL teams are headquartered in New Jersey, and Super Bowl XLVIII will be played there. For now, however, New Jersey's effort won't affect the game. "We are continuing our Super Bowl planning and do not anticipate this having any impact," Aiello told Wetzel. The league's position possibly is influenced by strong optimism that the NFL will beat down the New Jersey plan in court. However, if New Jersey somehow prevails, the league's plans could change, in theory.

I'm not so sure that gambling will be the problem in New Jersey during the Super Bowl. I think the real problem will be keeping Governor Christie from eating every single morsel of food in the area before the big game.

Now that the NFL has such significant sway over politics and legislation, the next step is the Pope and the Dalai Lama. Goodell will be the King of the World. Too much power for any single person.

Can anyone explain to me why the NFL would take this position? Intuitively, it would seem that more betting = more interest in NFL football.

Look, Gov. Cristie is a loudmouth a##hole. It is what he is. His budget will have around a $1 Billion shortfall in 2013. He is the only one who says that is not true.
Sooooo, he is looking for revenue.

Because, the wider spread around it is, the more chance of players taking a bribe. This is not the church choir you are dealing with anywhere you look.

It is all about the spread and that line comes out of Vegas. You don't have to lose a game on purpose, just don't cover that spread.
