Poll: America's Team is...

08:07 AM ET 05.27 | When a poll released in December showed that the Green Bay Packers had surpassed the Cowboys as the NFL's most popular team -- and had garnered twice as many votes as the Cowboys, to boot -- some were left wondering if Green Bay was more deserving of the "America's Team" moniker than a club that hasn't won a Super Bowl since 1995. But after a one-and-done run through the postseason, the Packers' popularity seems to have seriously waned, if a poll conducted by ESPN this week is to be believed. The new poll showed the Cowboys had returned to the top of the NFL food chain, earning the title of favorite team from 8.8 percent of respondents, while the Packers only garnered 7.2 percent, good for second place. The New York Giants tied with the Pittsburgh Steelers for third place, while the Philadelphia Eagles (9th) and the Washington Redskins (13th) rounded out the rest of the NFC East. The Cowboys' division was easily the league's most popular, garnering a cumulative 22.2 percent of the total vote.

The science of popularity voting is based in what? Opinions constantly change and I have to believe that had NFL Films never made "America's Team" or given it to another team, how would that affect this poll. Nothing against the Boys (yeah, I'm still PO'd about Landry) but fan support isn't getting them any closer to another championship.

Neither is Jerry Jones.

Morning Mick.

Trying to be unbiased about this, who would you pick to "represent" America? I like the smaller market blue collar teams (GB, Pitt, Buffalo, etc...). Don't think I could pick Pittsburgh just because, as much as I admire what the Rooneys have created, too many players create too much controversy.

He at least brought a Championship to Dallas by getting the superbowl there again.

Morning LSN.........The team I picked is based on many things.............Fan base, legend, players, stadium, reputation among others.......My choice.......Green Bay Packers.............

The Cowboys have been a marketing machine from the beginning. Between the cheerleaders to movies like North Dallas Forty, there has been more money spent trying to create a legend than effort to build one. That isn't meant to take away from teams that have accomplished greatness but a large portion of their fanbase has been created through media attention.

Damn... that's good.

Makes sense. Look at all those States in the West and southwest that have no team in the NFL. Oklahoma, New Mexico, Montana the Dakotas , Wyoming, Arkansas and others. They have been there since 1960. Makes sense and means little to anyone else but those fans.

Not a bad choice, but that Spygate nonsense is probably too polarizing for a lot of people.

Must say I'm a bit surprised to see the Eagles listed so high. Maybe they get additional credit for being in Philly with the Liberty Bell and Independence Hall. I think Ben Franklin makes occasional appearances at the games.
