08:05 AM ET 05.28 | Ryan Mathews already averaged nearly six yards per touch this past season, but he's threatening bigger things in 2012. Mathews is having one of those offseasons, the kind that build a buzz about a young player coming into his own, about the strong season that, in a few months' time, could follow. ... With [Mike Tolbert's] free-agency departure to Carolina, Mathews will assume most of that work. And it's time, Chargers coaches say. Head coach Norv Turner makes a gesture when discussing Mathews' NFL development, flattening a hand, lifting it a few inches into the air and sloping it upward toward the sky. Steady, year-to-year progress. "I personally think he's ready to take that next step," said Turner.

Norv Turner better be hoping he does. Chargers really need to start house cleaning with the coaching staff if they don't produce this year.

My take is Norvy boy is outta there after this year. He might not even make it the entire season.

Who cares? A Leap year doesn't even happen until February, and by then the season is over.

This just in, Mathews Aka "China Doll" is on home bed rest, he suffered a lower back strain reaching back to wipe himself .. this comes just days after he suffered a serious tongue sprain eating an ice cream. This guy cannot go down a flight of stairs at the Chargers training camp without going on IR. I own toothpick structures that are more fundamentally solid than this guy. I predict that Mathews goes down in the 1 or second game, and the Chargers trade Kateing to get Forte and never look back..

Ryan Mathews has "the potential" (kiss of death comment) to be an elite back in the NFL. Unfortunately, he can't stay healthy long enough to prove it.

when is turner ready to take the next step is my question

I am for trying anything to win. The Chargers haven't won for years with what they have now so they have everything to gain and if not they will be fired.
