Konerko mum about the subject on everyone's mind

08:23 AM ET 05.28 | Like a pitcher making his way through a no-hitter, there is an elephant in the White Sox clubhouse. What's happening at the Cell is a story that needs to be told, though the man standing in a corner of the White Sox' clubhouse won't be the one telling it. That would be the modest Paul Konerko, who is flirting with hitting .400. The word "flirt" would suggest he's an active participant in the hoopla over the possibility of reaching that magic number. Trust me, he's having nothing to do with the idea. ... This May, he's hitting .410. His best month historically is June (.306). If you go by that, more good things could be ahead. Even though he's 36, he might be playing his best baseball.

The short answer is "no way in hell."

By the time this guy's done, he could be the best player NOT in the HOF who doesn't stink of PED's. He's going to finish .290, 2500, 475/1500. 25 years from now, people will wonder how he's not in the HOF, but I can't see him getting a serious look.

So consistent. A pro's pro.

I hate the ChiSox, and this guy has been a career Tiger killer, but damn it, I respect him. He's a helluva ballplayer. Not quite HoF, but a solid career 95% of athletes could only wish they could have.

I saw his average last night and just KNEW I'd be reading an article today about the chase for .400

Agreed he's a great player and as a Cubs fan he's one of the very few White Sox I respect. But talking .400 already??? C'MON MAN!!

Elephant in the room? Do they talk about no-hitters in the third inning in Chicago too?

Konerko is fantastic, but why would anyone be talking about a .400 season after less than two months?

Why do you assume he won't eventually make it into the HoF? I'm pretty sure you lack foreknowledge. First ballot, no. Down the road, possibly.

Is there anything else to talk about?

Not in Chicago.
