Shot-blocking gets in the way of Rangers progress

08:31 AM ET 05.28 | Forgive some Rangers fans for not really wanting to watch Chris Kreider throwing himself in front of shots from the point next season. Check that: If you're a Rangers fan, the last thing you want to see the first month of next season is Kreider in street clothes, scratched from a game because he hadn't flung himself in front of shots from the blue line. ... [If] the Rangers are going to insist every player in the organization fit into the same round hole and there's no room for diverse styles under this coach, then that is severely going to limit the options available to general manager Glen Sather as he seeks to upgrade the team's talent level.

Torts likely only has another season or so on his "best before" date anyways

Good way of putting it.
I believe in having forwards that are committed to playing defense, but this obsession that the Rangers had for blocking shots has gotten a little out of hand.

Some might suggest that Torts Style and blocking shots got the Rangers to where they got...
Folks with Short Memories (like the folks at the Post) might also forget that the Rangers were not expected to finish highly this season.
Not being a Ranger Fan, I can respect what the Rangers did and understand how they got there.

Tortorella got alot out of his team in the regular season, but he was badly out-coached in all three rounds, and only Lundquist and a big talent gap in his favor got the Rangers to squeak thru the first two rounds. All three opponents made big changes in forechecking schemes and had great success; I don't understand how Torts could put so little effort into countering that. And if I had a dollar for every time I saw Del Zotto let the forechecker take the puck rather than absorb a hit, my kids' college would be paid for.

Be careful Harry or you'll rile up our resident half-wit. I suggested the same thing 3 or 4 months ago and the kid was having convulsions all over his mommy's puter before the short bus had even reached the end of the block.
I think what Ranger fans need to come to grips with is the fact that their isn't really all that talented and without Lundqvist in net they'd be screwed.

I think this season was it. I don't think the players will respond positively to his abusive rants anymore. The players are the ones who put body and career on the line. They'll only take so much from someone who's never played at the pro level before tuning them out.

Didn't the Ranger owner say this was a Stanley Cup winning team. Maybe Torts best before days just passed him by.

I think the Rangers did well, certainly better than my B's, but that style of play takes your best players out of the picture for about 5 seconds. If they can't score then you don't win. 5 seconds is the difference between a 2 on 1 versus a 2 on 3 these days. I think too much emphasis is placed on shot blocking there days and not positioning.

Scotty Bowman.

Scotty started in a different era when the players weren't making a zillion dollars and had very little (if any at all) leverage. He was then able to build a resume of so many championships that he had carte blanche form his owners and GM's to do whatever he wanted and his players (even in the new era) knew his systems would work and that when he threatened to bury you on the farm, he meant business.

Who cares what the "experts" thought before the season started. They always pick the teams from the previous year that made it to the finals or close to it. Outside of Pitt and Boston what teams in the East were considered favorites? He had the team playing playoff hockey all year, and the team eventually wore down. It happens all the time
