Boston giving Bruins legend's son a chance

08:32 AM ET 05.28 | They're very different players, obviously, but that last name will always turn a head in Boston. The Bruins have acquired Chris Bourque, son of legendary defenseman Ray Bourque, from the Capitals for Zach Hamill. Chris Bourque most recently played for Hershey, Washington's AHL affiliate. Bourque is a fringe NHLer who has appeared in 33 big-league games between Washington and Pittsburgh. Bourque played one year of college hockey at Boston University. Bourque could be in the mix for a fourth-line energy role if he has a good training camp. Hamill was the Bruins' first-round pick in 2007. Hamill would have been a restricted free agent on July 1.

When exactly did the term "4th line plugger" change to " energy role" ??

May 28, 2012  08:57 AM ET

Like the article said he is a fringe NHLer. Pittsburgh took him from Washington when they tried to waiver him down to the Bears. He played some for the Pens, but it was obvious he wasn't ready for the big time. Pens tried to waiver him to Wilkes-Barre, but the Caps picked him up again.

That having been said, Zach Hamil must be a total bust if he was a first rounder and is being traded for Bourque.

Oh, you know how they always have to make something positive sounding out of a negative. He's not a garbage man, he's a sanitary engineer.

Petey should trade him to the Avs so he can win a Cup.

Zach Hamil is a pretty talented kid who just isn't big enough to compensate for his lack of speed nor fast enough to compensate for his lack of size. A career in the minors and maybe some coaching after that is what I think is in his future.

Bourque's son is even smaller than Hamil. He won't be playing in Boston unless there is a serious spate of injuries.

You either have it or you don't. This particular Bourque doesn't.

Just because dad was great, doesn't mean kid automatically inherits his genes.

He has to play for the Bruins for 20 years first.

This one looks to be at least a half a mile away.

The apple falling from the tree was meant to respond to you, Canuck. More coffee needed.

Ahh this looks like my GMs doing Ray Bourque a favor...i happen to like our 4th line tho...1 of the best in the NHL.

Paille-Campbell-Thornton

Doesnt look like much but they hustle every shift and have chemistry...not bad stats too for 4th liners.

Jersey has been showing a heck of a 4th line this Spring also.

One will stay (hopefully Campbell since he can score into an empty net) and one will hit the road,

I looked at this deal as though the Bruins are freeing up a roster spot. I just don't see them signing Bourque to a contract to take Hamill's place in the AHL.

Bourque's deal is a two-way contract in the first year, worth $550,000 if he's in the NHL and $200,000 at the AHL level. In the second year, it's a one-way contract worth $550,000.
