Lions willing to send message to Fairley?

08:02 AM ET 05.29 | The charges facing Nick Fairley are serious, and it's now up to Jim Schwartz or GM Martin Mayhew to react. If receiver Titus Young can be booted from the practice facility (allegedly) for punching a teammate, the Lions need to ban Fairley. Get him help if he needs it. Don't act like it's not a big deal. I understand the NFL will handle suspensions -- perhaps 2-4 games for Fairley and Mikel Leshoure -- and the incidents happened outside the team environment. Doesn't matter. The narrative of the Lions as an edgy, rising power works very well when winning games, not so well when getting busted. Schwartz should be absolutely furious.

Fairley is looking DUI charges, along with citations for reckless driving, an open container in the car, and no proof of insurance.
Schwartz and the Lions need to nip this in the bud right now.

The Detroit News may want to pull back a little here... Would they rather detroit draft poor performing players like in the past? When you get the athletes that excell the most in College you get this type of baggage.

Agreed. But Schwartz really needs to give that team an identity. Last year, he did that "chasing down" Harbaugh because of the backslap. With uncontrolled aggression on the field comes uncontrolled stupidity off it.
Personally, I think they need a new "disciplinarian" in place because a HC can't have an incident like that and then reverse course. It will take a lot of work to get the team back on course.

The team needs to punish him regardless of what Goodell hands down. Besides being stupid behavior, he could have killed others with driving that fast, regardless of how much he had to drink.

There were warning flags around Fairley during the draft, and they look like they have been ignored by Detroit. This situation doesn't fix itself. Banning Fairley just gives him more free time to screw up, so they need to think of something else for him.

Detroit is not exactly a good place to rehab. There's got to be more drugs and vice of all kinds there than any place else in Michigan. (Although Three Rivers would give it a run for its money.)

This guy wasn't exactly an academic all-American. Combine that with millions of dollars in his pocket, and you're just asking for trouble.

Fairley needs a reality check, he's probably been pampered and people have looked the other way all his life because of his athletic abilities, He needs to learn we all suffer consequences for our misbehavior...

It amazes me how everyone just accepts the idea that the team and the league have the right to do anything about these charges. Throw him in jail, bury him under the jail if you want, but what right does his employer have to be involved at all. If they don't like it they should have only one option, fire him. The very idea of an employer fining or suspending someone for behaviour outside of work is absurd.

Why would they punish him? With how the coach is running that organization he likely qualified for a bonus and kicked in a contract escalator..... :)
Seriously tho they do need to do something up there and quickly.
