The next V.Y. at Texas? Swoopes hopes so

08:14 AM ET 05.29 | It's no coincidence that folks think of Vince Young when they hear about Tyrone Swoopes. Swoopes, Whitewright's 6-4, 225-pound dual-threat quarterback who has committed to Texas, grew up a Longhorns fan. That became particularly evident in middle school when Swoopes, a young quarterback for his seventh grade team, began running the same zone read scheme that Young had operated within at Texas. It was not only following Young's NFL career at the time, but going back and studying his college games that Swoopes hoped would make him a master of the zone read. "I tried to be as close to him as I could," Swoopes said. "He was good at what he did. I try to do the same things."

If he plays football as well as his aunt played basketball, he'll be better than Vince IMHO.

A small concern ... Whitewright is a 2A school and they play some 1A schools ... it will be quite a transition to D1 ball considering the level of competition he's played against. Or, put another way, he looks great playing against 2A competition but how would he stack up against 5A? Would he outrun 5A defenders and avoid 5A pass rushers?

I first heard about him in Jr High playing in WW. Don't know the history, but think it was where he was born and raised.

May take a little adjustment but...it can be done and quite successfully...

Colt McCoy...Jim Ned HS 2A
Eric Dickerson Sealy HS 3A

That will be the key... You guys better hope he is the next VY...Just follow the VY model.. Redshirt him then turn him loose.. and dont give him any hot dogs

Harsin ran the speed option with Kellen Moore, who did not have great foot speed. He also liked to throw it long and Moore had great accuracy and touch. I'm wondering how he plans to fit Swoopes into the O. We'll have some zone read plays for sure but I hope we stay the course and continue to emphasize the power game.

Yeah Colt and Cosby are 2 small school players that come to mind that succeeded at TX ... but Mack usually bypasses the small school guys in favor of 4A/5A. Mack offered small school C. Whaley at RB instead of C. Michel or T. Richardson and that decision didn't work out so well. Just sayin ....

With him at QB, might be the ultimate power game:

Swoopes recently clocked a 4.51 at nearly 220-pounds. He also set a school power clean record of 285 pounds. (numbers as a JR)
