08:15 AM ET 05.30 | The Mets hold an option on David Wright for 2013, after which he can become a free agent.[Wright's] agents can expect to hear from the Mets during this season. But general manager Sandy Alderson last night stopped short of saying the team will make an in-season contract offer to the All-Star third baseman. Alderson felt compelled to address the issue following the Mets' 6-3 victory over the Phillies at Citi Field because of a report that surfaced indicating the general manager expects to offer Wright a new contract before this season concludes. "I don't want to infer that we will make an offer [or] we won't make an offer," Alderson said. "We expect to talk to his agent this season."

I think what a lot of people are assuming is that David wants to stay with the Mets...but in my opinion the Mets have to prove to David they're gonna be a bonafide contender before David commits to any long term deal...I trulely believe if Wright doesn't see progress and doesn't believe Alderson can put a serious contender on the field by 2014 he will want out...Wright will then be traded either this year if they become hasbeens by August or the Mets will pick up his option for next year go through this whole charade again with this same cast of players and be traded next year...the Mets won't let happen with Reyes (getting nothing) happen again with Wright...

Nice thoughts. The thing I think that is playing in the Mets favor right now is they are playing fairly good ball. And with the Wilpon crap passed - the management may have some leeway to start building using this years performance to date as leverage. But - we'll see.

the reyes thing wasn't handled wellyou as a met fan know you couldn't invest all that money in an oft-injured speed guy. (see carl crawford)should've traded him mid-season

The Wilpon albatross was hanging over the Mets Owners heads. It's gone now - it should be a little different with Wright than it was with Reyes - but I do agree - I have reservations about the ability of Reyes to stay healthy....

Talking about the issues of the financial scandal - not the Wilpons themselves.

This season is important to for the Mets to prove to David that the Ike Davis,Lucas Duda,,Kirk Nieuwenheis,John Niese,Dillon Gee's of the world ...etc..are for real and what is Aldersons plan if they continue to contend...are they gonna spend any money???.....I think what I'm trying to say is I don't see Wright waiting 4-5 years for this team to contend...it has to happen by 2014...if it doesn't then moving David would be in the best interest of both parties...

I concur in general - but I think contending by 2014 may be a little quick (to the level of getting deep in the playoffs - IMHO). But 2015 and about then - maybe. But what do I know. I work with computers all day....

Without a doubt...and if it happens again with Wright...then something is seriously wrong...

I'm going with 2014...by then Harvey and Wheeler should be up and we should know by then if Davis and Duda are be the bonafide power hitters along with Wright to make up a solid 3-4-5..

Where do the pitching changes come in? Just asking?
