Spurrier wants change in the SEC

08:20 AM ET 05.30 | South Carolina coach Steve Spurrier is back to banging a familiar drum. [Spurrier] continued his push to alter the method for determining division football champions in the Southeastern Conference as the league's spring meetings began Tuesday. Spurrier planned to propose that only intra-division games count in the league standings to determine who plays for the SEC title. Whether he could generate enough support remained to be seen. With an unbalanced schedule, teams in the SEC East can be dealt a tough path to the title depending on which teams from the powerful West are on the schedule. "There are several people in favor and several who aren't," Spurrier said.

UGA - not in favor. They've had the benefit of weak West Division teams the last couple years.

Would UGa have been the SECe representative if only the record against division teams were counted? If not, then Spurrier has a point.

There have been a number of years when that happens. Probably 6 or so since the conference split into divisions in 1991.

It does happen when one team plays a harder inter-divisional schedule than the other.

Yep.

For some reason I can't see the water in the Dawgs pond being that clean and pretty!

Its the whole problem with conf champ games, and shows what a waste they really are. I think every CC game I can recall had some undeserving team from a weaker division playing in it.

Who cares if you won the division, you would have gotten smashed in the title game. Shut up and win the games you have, or demand 9-10 conference game schedule instead of playing Wofford.

The whole idea is stupid unless a team from the east can actually beat the best team from the west. Its not like UGA or SCAR would have been able to beat either LSU or Bama without a lot of luck last year. In a way SCAR was better off not having another loss on the record that UGA got.

Do SEC teams get extra money for going to the CC game? If so the motivation here makes a bit more sense.

Might as well not be in the same conference if that goes through.

My feelings exactly.

Look, I'm as pizzssed as the next guy and will always beeech and moan when my team has to play all the tough teams from the other division (although we usually pull a Trogan and duff a game against somebody like Ole Miss), but that's the luck of the draw. When you start saying a conf game doesn't count, then I really have a problem with that.

I guess you would Steve with Vandy and Ky. in your division. You know the West is a whole lot stronger with the two Bama schools and LSU.

Sure Spurrier is crying, USCe beat Georgia last year, but still finished behind them in the SEC East standings!!!! Do football fans realize how petty some of the SEC coaches sound???? Maybe we will be hearing some crying from the coaches of the B12, B10 and the 12 PAC in the future about games that they lose not counting in their standings, do uou think????? LOL.

The BCS already has the "NFL model", they let Bama in as a "Wild Card" team last year. :-)
