08:22 AM ET 05.30 | Bob Hartley has in very short order become a hot property on the open coaching market. [Hartley] is being strongly considered as the new head coach of the Calgary Flames, according to a report by RDS. The television network's hockey analyst Vincent Damphousse is reporting Hartley has had a second interview for the position, vacated when Brent Sutter and the Flames had a mutual parting at the end of the season. Hartley and Flames GM Jay Feaster worked together on the 1997 Calder Cup-champion Hershey Bears of the American Hockey League. On Monday, TheHockeyWriters.com reported that Hartley would be named the new head coach of the Montreal Canadiens.

this is true...but I am realtively certain that he has either an exit or buy-out clause, and I am also certain that even if he doesn't, then the Habs can easily afford ZSC's price. Figure that a few million dollars goes a LONG way in the Swiss league...

as the resident Habs fan, here's my NOVEL. Completely disregard it or read it...
On a personnal note, I kind of like the idea of Hartley coaching the Habs because he was good friends with my uncles in high school and worked the assembly line with one of em while he was getting started in coaching. Every time I have met him he seemed like a decent enough guy and knowing the community that he grew up in, I would have to believe that he (probably more than most) understands the unique link between the Habs and french canadian culture.
As far as strictly hockey is concerned though, I'm not too sure. He proved in Colorado that he can lead a winner. Every season his team was in the mix (including he one he was fired), every year the Avs won the division. How much of that was Hartley? Hard to tell, because it was a stacked team. On the other hand, during his Atlanta years he proved that he couldn't turn around a pretender. He took his team to he playoffs on one occasion, and even then, only by winning a dreadful division (followed by a 1st round sweep). The Thrashers never really improved. How much of it was Hartleys fault? How much blame does Waddell deserve?
After the Thrashers he never got anoter gig. To me this is important because it's not as obvious as, say, Ted Nolan, but at the same time there must be a good reason why NOBODY offered a job to a former cup winning coach. I can understand that for a few years his ego probably kept him from taking something in the AHL or as an assistant...but even at that, he was out of coaching for 4-5 years before taking a job in SWITZERLAND. Rumor is that he was black-balled because the players hted him and he wears out his welcome fast. This worries me because the Habs are trying to move AWAY from that type of philosophy.
Which brings me to this season. He got a 2 year contract coaching ZSC...he won the Swiss league. Great...but what does it tell us? If we rank the international leagues, where do we figure that the swiss league fits in? 1. Nhl. 2+3 = AHL + KHL (whatever order) 4. Swedish 5+6 = Swiss + Finnish, debatable. So he won a title in perhaps the 5th best hockey league in the world. Wow,incredible stuff.
Then he went home to 'oversee' things as a secial assistant to Eric Veilleux in Shawinigan. Surprise, surprise the Cats win the Memorial Cup. A legend in born. I don't really know what to make of it all.
Veilleux had 1 foot out the door in Shawinigan & supposedly was only kept because they were hosting the Mem Cup & it wouldnt make sense to fire him before the tournament. How much credit should go to Hartley? Supposedly he played a MAJOR role in the game strategy & although siting in the press box, he communicated regularly with the bench during the game + he led Veilleux through post-game video sessions. How much credit has to goto Hartley? How much to he players? How much to Veilleux?
No doubt, Hartley had a very good season...but IMO the 2 big questions that I had concerning him remain unanswered: 1. Can he develop talent? 2. Why was he blackballed in the NHL?
