Brees talks held up by 'franchise' language?

08:03 AM ET 05.31 | Leverage in contract negotiations -- or, in the case of Drew Brees, what appear to be non-negotiations -- often winds up being as important as salary. The debate over whether Saints quarterback Drew Brees is a first-year or second-year franchise player is interesting, and it's unprecedented. ... Brees, his agent, Tom Condon, and the NFL Players Association feel Brees should be counted as a second-year franchise player because he was franchised by the San Diego Chargers in 2005. And if they ultimately get an arbitrator to agree with them, that means the Saints would only get to franchise Brees one more time in 2013, with a pay increase of 44 percent ($23.574 million) instead of 20 percent ($19.645 million).

Tom Benson is just happy to have won the NBA lottery. Probably forgot he owned an NFL team.

The Saints must figure that NO must be Brees's last stop and that he'd have nowhere else to go after he gets franchised as much as he can.

It sure is not about the money. If they can only tag him this one year, then he has every card, and he will use it.

Read somewhere that the fans established an online collection site for Drew Brees.

How dumb is that ?

Also the Saints owner is bringing the same dirty controversy to his new basketball team I see... How they got the #1 overall pick makes no sense.

* I bet he signs his new #1 pick, before he signs Brees.

How is it that a successful businessman can't see how badly he's effing this up?

Doesn't matter what happens from here: Brees walks at his first opportunity.

I wouldn't have a problem with that.

Meaning?

Brees needs to find a way to sit out a year and still get a clear title. The Saints are mearly a place keeper on the schedule this year thanks to the choirboy.

Blind faith...believing that his fans will overlook anything since they won the 'chip a few yrs ago

Meaning, I wouldn't have a problem if he left NO at his first opportunity. They're going out of their way to de-value his services. Clearly they think that because of his age now and how old he'll be after they're done franchising him, he won't be nearly as valuable on the open market as he would be right now. If they continue to dick him over, I hope he does get the chance to play elsewhere.

Franchise isn't a language. Idiots, it's French. :/

How can that be? Mark Sanchize is "Hispanic," whatever that means.
