June return hopes dim for Howard

08:13 AM ET 05.31 | Scratch June off the list, too. After weeks of not wanting to put a timetable on Ryan Howard's potential return to the lineup, Phillies general manager Ruben Amaro Jr. offered a hint on Wednesday. Amaro was asked if he believed Howard could be back before the end of June. "I don't believe so," he said. "I don't think so." Could Howard be back by the All-Star break? "I don't know," Amaro said. The Phillies play their last game before the All-Star break on July 8 and resume play again on July 13. It sounds as if that may be a reasonable timetable for Howard's return -- provided everything continues to go well as he builds strength after requiring surgery in October to repair a ruptured left Achilles tendon.

Is that where you've been waiting to take his order?

Zing!!

The only positive thing about all of this that Howard will be healthy and rested for the second half of the season.

As a Phillies fan who has followed this since his injury last October, the team has handled expectations to the fans all wrong. From what I read, it is an 8-10 month injury, and the player usually isn't fully recovered til the NEXT season especially for a guy who is Howards size. I always expected Howard back after the all-star break because he got hurt in October and the 8-10 month window is around July. I remember many beat writers and fans thinking he would be back in May or at the latest June and I thought that was ridiculous.

Sounds like he'll be ready just about the time Halladay will.

And how long after the achilles is healed ...will it take him to get into baseball shape...I can just imagine how much he's ballooned up to at this point....

He didn't look like he'd ballooned last time I saw video, but that was early April.

should the phillies trade cole hamels for at least 4 top prospect pitchers from the nationals????

May 31, 2012  11:33 AM ET

the phillies need aside from offense, they do need more starting pitching in their roster, this franchise can't just let hamels walk away without nothing in return,,,
