Pro Bowl falls on hard times: A lost cause?

08:03 AM ET 06.01 | Hawaii, New Orleans or the moon, how does one fix the Pro Bowl? "I don't think you can," Buffalo Bills coach Chan Gailey told ESPN.com. "I don't have any thoughts on that," Bills general manager Buddy Nix added. One NFL general manager, who spoke to ESPN.com on the condition of anonymity, pleaded: "Just cancel it now, please." The NBA, Major League Baseball and NHL have found ways to make their all-star games interesting and entertaining for fans. Yet the NFL fails to hit the mark year after year with the Pro Bowl. To be blunt, the game is no longer relevant. The consensus among NFL coaches and front office executives surveyed at the owners meetings is that fixing the Pro Bowl is a lost cause.

I haven't watch it since I was a kid (late 1970s) because the best players withdraw from the game because the game as no relevancy.

I think they need to move to nothing more than a skills competition. Maybe a fanfest of sorts for everyone that can't afford all the SB hype.

They should add an extra incentive for the winning team. 50 or 100 grand might do the trick.

They did away with the NFL champion vs college all star game.
They did away with the runner up consolation game that used to be played.
Should not be too hard to just let this go. Once upon a time the players cared because of the extra money when salaries were not what they are now. No reason to even bother now. Name a mythical team ( for contract purposes/bonuses ) that the players still want and move on.

If anything the pro bowl diminishes the product.

The stupidest thing they ever did with the Pro Bowl was moving it to the week before the Superbowl, thus guaranteeing that a lot of the best players wouldn't go. Putting it in Hawaii may get players to go, but how about fans? That's a long airplane ride from anywhere, and if I were going to Hawaii, I'd spend every day doing something much better than sitting in a football stadium watching a no-contact football game.
Come to think of it, though, the Pro Bowl model may be just what we need to reduce injuries in the NFL.

I don't get this when was this game ever relevent...its an All Star game...an exhibition game...go back to playing at the end of the year.....the TV ratings will never be great for it....but then again when were they great ....maybe back before free agency....and that was a long time ago...

I have been a die hard Bears fan my whole life and have NEVER watched more than 2-3min of ANY pro bowl in my life. IMO, it's a joke and is never taken seriously.

I think this is the only solution. Why would the top players skip this opportunity to show their dominance in skills related to their position. Just take a look at the press the combine gets. Do something similar for veteran players and rookies alike. It might just be a temporary fix, but its got a much brighter future than the snoozefest that is the Probowl. Even as a kid I would tape the Probowl only to fast forward through the whole boring game. The NHL has moved more to this sort of event and its much more entertaining than the game. I would encourage MLB to do the same.

On top of that, the Wranglers sent him an eviction notice and are trying to get back the Jeep Wrangler they gave him. Rock-bottom, meet T.O.'s career.

The game isn't even really played. There's no pride aspect anymore or anything that might lead to a decent competition. Players are too afraid of getting hurt. It's a dinosaur that should be put out of its - and our - misery. (I always used to think of the Pro Bowl as a grim harbinger of a forlorn winter: no more football, only basketball. Now I don't think of it at all.)
