08:16 AM ET 06.01 | Signed as a shortstop, 6-foot-3, 235-pound Miguel Sano has been moved to third -- and, now, it seems, it's a matter of when he'll move through the minor league system and to the Twin Cities. [Sano] leads the Midwest League in home runs (13) and RBI (40), but he has also stuck out 60 times in 51 games and his batting average has slipped to .245 through Wednesday. ... "I'm just trying to focus on getting myself up there so I can play at a higher level and be able to help the team win," Sano says. "I want to be there in two years." Terry Ryan was a great general manager for the Twins. He was great because he could find great talent. Unfortunately he stepped down from his position in '07. They hired Bill Smith, who obviously was a buffoon. Ryan is back in the org so the Twins will contend again in a few years.

I wouldn't say that Smith was a buffoon. He's a numbers guy, not a talent evaluator. Twins were just too loyal in giving it to an insider rather than looking elsewhere.But, that's how the Twins do it. Ryan came up as a scout.... so he had an inside track when he got his chance too.

Looks like you know the history. Ryan was great 'cause he built a Central Division contender on the cheap.

was thinking about this last night. over last 5 yrs or so everything that possibly could have gone wrong went wrong. injuries to mauer and morneau as well as others, their two best pitching prospects both in post tommy john recovery at moment, came out on wrong end of pretty much every trade they made, etc, etc.

They were good because they had a great farm system, and developed the players and Ryan was the main reason behind that. He has big shoes to fill, and unless his next replacement has immediate and prolonged success, they will be viewed as a failure.
