New coach the least of Calgary concerns

08:24 AM ET 06.01 | The Calgary Flames have a new coach, which may mean little to the fortunes of an organization that's trying to take a new direction. Fact is, the Flames had a good coach the last three years and fell short of their modest goal of making the NHL playoffs. Their problems year after year don't revolve around coaching issues, although it sure makes for a convenient excuse/scapegoat. The problems in Calgary have long revolved around skill -- or more precisely a lack thereof -- both on the ice and in the scouting ranks. Jay Feaster has paid lip-service to changing the organization???s approach by declaring it's no longer acceptable to simply aim for one of the final playoff spots.

Let's be honest -- ANYBODY could have coached that 2001 Avalanche team to a Cup. How will Hartley do with a team NOT loaded with HOF'ers??

He's a good coach and a good guy, he won a Calder Cup as the coach of Hershey I think it was in 97. He still comes back to the area in the off season to help some youth hockey camps.

The big question is will Feaster get him the talent he needs and will he let him run the team the way he knows is right.

Depends on whether or not the organization is willing to do what it takes to get the players he needs to succeed.

I listened to most of what he had to say yesterday. He was doing well until he was asked does Calgary need a rebuild. No was his answer and he agreed with ownership and mgmt. that the team was not that far away and compared the Flames with Kings because they were only five pts. apart. That's where he lost it for me.

Check out his Atlanta tenure for your answer.

Was that Hartley's fault or the ownership in Atlanta not doing what they needed to do to get good players? Most of Atlanta's issues fall on poor ownership, which makes most GMs and coaches look bad.

Nice one Canuck. That will pose a challenge for him.

If they can get a Sacic Foresberg and Roy like he had before he will be fine

He'll take the Flames to soaring success. Like he did the Atlanta Thrashers. ;-)

Because he doesn't have a say in it. If he says yes, makes the ownership/gm look stupid. He will be gone in 2 years.

I get that and not many turn down a coaching job. I am sure his tune will change half way through the season when the Flames have more losses then wins and the rebuild issue becomes even more clear. I give Sutter credit for saying no to them when managment said major changes weren't necessary

HC is without his laptop today but wanted his message passed on. " Flames are putting out the fire by tossing in greener wood....save me." He also mentioned "same players big ******deal. Stupid bumbling Flames". Good old Harry he is honest about what he thinks of Flames mgmt.

that was my question with relation to his possibly coaching the Habs. He won the division 5 consecutive years with the Avs, but its not unreasonable to assume that any stiff could have done the same. He was a disaster in Atlanta & was hated by the players. Not too sure how much of it was his fault, Waddell was a horrid GM & really didnt help the team. He won the Swiss league this year. Good accomplishment, but still the 5th or 6th best league in the world. He helped the Cats win the memorial cup. Also a good accomplishment.

Hes certainly an interesting hire for Calgary.
