Best Giants Coach: Coughlin or Parcells?

09:33 AM ET 06.03 | Bill Parcells is considered the greatest coach in Giants history and is one of the favorites to be selected for the Pro Football Hall of Fame class of 2013. If Tom Coughlin has not completely closed the gap on Parcells as the best Giants coach of all time, he's at least a big part of the conversation now that he's tied Parcells with his second Super Bowl championship. I believe the edge goes to Parcells because he's the one who changed the culture of the Giants and began this era of five Super Bowl appearances and four titles beginning with the first Super Bowl in 1986. In the last 26 seasons, the Giants have won more Super Bowls than any team (Pats and Cowboys have won three) and only the Patriots have been in more Super Bowls with six. One more Super Bowl championship, or even appearance, and Coughlin jumps over Parcells.

It's just a bizarre business given that, on the one hand, you're talking about Coughlin being the best Giants coach ever, and on the other hand, the guy is close to getting fired every year!

This article sounds like the GM Young had nothing to do with the Giants turnaround, like it was all Parcells. I believe Parcells got way TOO MUCH credit for what the Giants did.

I don't think he's as near getting fired as the media likes to make it. Makes for a good story line. Coughlin really developed that team and they became even better when Barber retired. Nothing like removing a cancerous growth to see a team on the verge of success flourish.

Not many coaches go through their career without getting fired or having to work under the threat of being fired. Maybe Landry, Lombardi, and Shula, but I can' think of many others.

Just like players. They're not coaching the same game from a decade ago. That's why Reid is now irrelevant and has to get out of Philly. Too long in the same system. Can't even compare Coughlin (NY) with Coughlin (JAX) with rules changes and such.

Parcells did NOT change the culture of the Giants. That was Ray Perkins. The writer does not know Jack about the Giants.

There was NO free agencyin 1986 when Parcells team won that superbowl. Teams could draft well and keep guys.
In 1990 when his team won their second superbowl only " plan B " free agency was in place. Which did not matter because teams did not sign a player from another team because the cost was too high.
With the cap and present free agency rules, it is harder for any team to remain at the top for long. apples/Oranges.

I like the mental toughness of Caughlin, we win with who we have, last year(lost starters) they started the season missing 2 Offensive lineman, a Tight End', a slot receiver and injured running backs, he never complained!!!
