Teams with a shot at Nash

08:12 AM ET 06.04 | Steve Nash, in hoping his next contract is his last, has said for some time now that he's all ears this offseason. But he admitted last month at a press conference in Toronto that he hadn't even started the process. More, then, is known about the teams chasing Nash. It's a list that still starts with the Phoenix Suns ... but it's also destined to be a longer list than you think once free agency actually starts, since Nash is seen around the league as far more gettable than D-Will. Sources briefed on the matter told ESPN.com that the three teams with salary-cap space best positioned to make a credible run at the 38-year-old, at this early juncture, are Portland, Toronto and Brooklyn (should the Nets lose D-Will).

Nash is the GM for the Suns and he isn't leaving unless they have him and Grant Hill packaged

Nash is going somewhere where he has an opportunity to go out on top; with a ring. I'm with Jack, Nash can come out to L.A. where they're going to be cleaning house (sigh, finally) for the best of the upcoming season (bias...I know). This off-season should be very promising should he be patient enough to see how the draft/trades/free agency goes to get a better idea of how good teams build themselves before he decides to sign with another team.

The only legitimate reason for Nash to leave the Suns would be to pursue a ring. With that in mind, Portland, Brooklyn, and Toronto should be the last places he would go. As bad as I hate to say it, the ideal place to go would probably be Miami.

I think the Suns should keep Nash, go after Juwan Howard, see if Zydrunas Ilgauskas wants to return to the league and lastly sign A.I. to a 3 year deal so they can become the oldest team in the NBA overnight!

If he wants a ring Miami/OKC would be the destination.

Steve Nash is great enough to get even a seemingly bad team into a contender/almost-contender. Given that, I think Steve Nash will make the Atlanta Hawks seem functional. Talent-wise, ATlanta should be on the upper half of the league. Intelligence-wise, they gotta improve to be called boneheads. So imagine how a leader and intelligent player of Steve Nash's caliber will help the Hawks. If he can make Hakim Warrick look like a border-line allstar, he will make Josh Smith (unless they trade him) a top 10 player. Yes. Mr. Nash is that good.

Heat? Thunder? how will he fit? Raptors? Might as well stay with the Suns. Spurs? the point being? Lakers? Maybe. Portland? in shambles. You gotta admit. Atlanta, I apologize for saying this, makes sense.

I don't know that cap situation with the Lakers, for example if they can use the trade excemption they got for Odom to somehow get Nash, but it would be great if they could get him and take one last shot with this group. Sign him to a two year deal, then he, Gasol and Metta would all come off the books in a couple years, Kobe the next year.

Obviously, if Nash is gonna move, he's gonna do it for a ring, not money. If he wants money, he stays in Phoenix, so I'd say Portland, Toronto, and Brooklyn are not in contention.

His next decision is does he want an almost sure thing, even if he doesn't necessarily have a real role to play in winning the championship? If so, then probably OKC , Miami or maybe San Antonio (real long shot there) or the Clippers could be his choice.

Or does he want a decent shot at a title where his arrival may be the key piece to put together the title run? In that case, then Atlanta, Knicks or the Lakers could be on the list.

The Knicks would probably need to win the arbitration case on Bird rights so they could offer their M L E to Nash instead of Lin, plus the Knicks would have to convince Nash that they have the ability to beat the Heat over the next two or three years to have a real shot at him, but he makes his off-season home in NYC, so it has possibilities.

My guess? LA or OKC.
