08:25 AM ET 06.04 | Jaylon Smith made himself lucky No. 13 for the Notre Dame 2013 recruiting class over the weekend, and he's out to grow that number himself. The charismatic Smith said Saturday that he's already gone to work on a handful of players who are in ND's crosshairs. ... Smith mentioned cornerback Vernon Hargreaves of Tampa, Fla., and linebacker Alex Anzalone of Wyomissing, Pa., as players he's targeting. Hargreaves is ranked as the nation's No. 9 player by Rivals.com and Anzalone No. 49. Add to that group, according to Wiltfong, linebacker Michael Hutchings of Concord, Calif. Hutchings is rated as the nation's 51st-best player. With Manti Te'o graduating, linebacker is among ND's biggest needs.

Why would a good player go to a school that is insignificant in football?

1. You'll get a school that takes pride in educating their athletes with meaningful degrees. 2. You're playing for the most recognizable "brand" in college football. 3. You're playing on national TV EVERY week. Shall I continue...?

If it don't work out for Smith as a player he is already in training for a coaching position.

Maybe he has never been pepper-sprayed or smacked a cop and wants to experience all of that?

True, but he can play right away at a place like ND. He would have guys in front of him for a few years in the SEC.

I see your point. Pretty much every player in the SEC is a first round pick in the NFL draft. No need to bother with a degree there...

The "pretty much" in my comment made an allowance for Vandy...
