08:30 AM ET 06.04 | For Len Boogaard, the story of his son's life continues in the form of trying to answer why Derek was abusing prescription drugs. A trove of documents, compiled by Boogaard's father, offer a rare prescription-by-prescription history of the care given to a prominent, physically ailing athlete who struggled with addiction to some of the very drugs the team doctors were providing. ... Among the findings: In a six-month stretch from October 2008 to April 2009, while playing 51 games, Boogaard received at least 25 prescriptions for the painkillers hydrocodone or oxycodone, a total of 622 pills, from 10 doctors -- eight team doctors of the Wild, an oral surgeon in Minneapolis and a doctor for another N.H.L. team.

Please do not misunderstand me here, i feel for the guys family and all, but does accountability ever come into this equation? It seems awfully easy when a guy/girl says they're in pain to just pop off a scrip, especially if the Dr. is getting something for doing do.
Does Big Pharma's role ever get fully probed here? I can't speak for Canada, but I know here in the US, I'd bet that minimum 50% of people are on some kind of drug....permanently.

Its sad what happened to Boogaard, but everyone was so quick to blame it on concussions. The more likely blame seems to be that he was strung out on prescription drugs. Like Spiny said there has to be some accountability. I can understand how professional athletes can get hooked on these drugs. I mean they are always hurt and they need something to manage the pain, but someone should be looking out for how many drugs they are getting. I would think that there should be some sort of tracking on how many pills he is getting. In the US now you can't get Claritan D and other similar decongestants without showing some ID and having them check on how much Claritan you bought recently. Why can't they do that with Oxy?

I say if the family has a beef with the doctors that supplied his son with the drugs that kill him, sue the hell out of them. Go after them for every penny they can get. I have no problem with that!
That Derek was an addict, we already know. And that he's dead because of it, we also know. But, as sure as hell I resent the media morons at the NY Times, or any others, exploiting the story. Expose the doctors, if you want. You'll be doing the family and all of us a huge favor but, leave the dead alone!

Joe Average can't. You have too many Rxs filled and they'll flag you and won't dispense until the prescribing doctor overrides it.
But the whole decongestant thing is to keep people from making meth.

Big Pharms makes the drugs. They don't prescribe them. The accountability rests with the patients and the doctors. Many states are trying to help by setting up databases that can be checked to see if someone is "doctor shopping" to get more Rxs filled for these kinds of drugs. Unfortunately, in the world of professional sports, there seems to be too many people willing to go outside the lines to get athletes whatever they ask for.
