Thomas sabbatical complicates Rask signing

08:31 AM ET 06.04 | The spotlight has now undoubtedly focused on Tuukka Rask in Boston, where No. 1 goalie Tim Thomas confirmed over the weekend, via Facebook, that he'll take next season off. With the absence of Thomas, the B's are expected to go with [Rask] as their No. 1 goalie and Anton Khudobin as the backup. Rask, who like Thomas is represented by agent Bill Zito, is a restricted free agent and would appear to have gained some negotiating leverage with Thomas' decision, though the Bruins could take him to arbitration. Still, going through the often-contentious process of arbitration is probably not the way Chiarelli would like to deal with Rask, who just finished a two-year, $2.5 million contract.

still strikes me as odd decision, especially for a 38 year olde golaie
And I wonder how the fact that Rask and Thomas have the same agent really figures into this...

That's ridiculous. Is there any way the Bs can get his salary off the books?
I don't understand what Timmy is thinking either. At this stage I would think he could just play a season or two and then retire or just retire now. But a one year sabbatical makes no sense.

thomas is nuts if he thinks he is going to make the olympic roster in 2014 pulling this. He is going to have to showcase himself against a half dozen YOUNGER goalies, and it won't be in a bruins sweater. Very selfish and arrogant act that is putting a team that gave him a shot in a big hole. But at least he can go to church and IHOP with his family and friends now every sunday while pocketing that 3 million while doing nothing.
