Can Pittsburgh even sign Appel?

08:15 AM ET 06.05 | First things first: Mark Appel's rights are now owned by Pittsburgh. The next step is whether the Pirates can sign him and how much money that will require and how that affects their allotted dollars for draft picks under the new collective bargaining agreement. For the second year in a row, the Pirates will deal with agent Scott Boras. ... The eighth slot was assigned a value of $2.9 million. The Pirates can spend more than that, but could jeopardize their ability to sign the rest of their picks in the first 10 rounds. "There's a system in place, there's a process in place," Huntington said. "We're very optimistic we have a legitimate shot to sign Mark."

Good luck Pirates though I would personally rather walk over hot coals bare footed.

The other teams passed on Apple for fear that they couldn't sign him but it's a good gamble by the Bucs. The slot for the 8th pick is 2.9 million. When all is said and done, Apple will sign because next year's draft is much deeper in talent and if he doesn't duplicate his stellar junior season at Stanford, he very well could drop out of the top 10 in next year's draft and thus receive even less money. It's more of a gamble for Apple not to sign that it is for the Pirates to take him.

Lance McCullers Jr. fell through the first round to 41 in part because Boras is "advising" him.

They might not be able to sign Appel- or even spell apple- but Borass could singe him.

He might be better off going to UF and then come back into the draft after his junior season.

Does any Borass player not fall in the draft anymore? Why these guys continue hiring him amazes me when there are plenty of respectable agents out there.

Good to see his reputation work against him sometimes.

Because 2.9 million is worth passing on.

Because he may go higher in the draft and stand to make more.

He may go lower and make less...and he will be a regular shlub for one more year...
And the pay that he does not make next year he can not get back. Other than that...

Nutting is too cheap to pay, he's making $40-45 Million a year on the Bucs, why spend money and upgrade?

Might be that bird in the hand is worth more than the bush over there. Or something like that.

The guy would be crazy not to go to Pittsburgh, they are going to have some team very soon!!!
