Thomas gearing up for Olympic run?

08:24 AM ET 06.05 | Tim Thomas isn't helping the goalie fraternity's perception that they're just, well, different. Thomas [and agent Bill Zito] maintain he is exhausted physically and mentally, and needs a break. (He moved his family from Boston to Colorado last season, although it was prior to the White House fiasco.) At this point, it sure seems like his mind is elsewhere. Whether NHL players attend or not, Thomas is very serious about the 2014 US Olympic Team. Apparently, Thomas believes if he rests his body now, he can ramp up his training in a year and return in peak shape for the 2013-14 season. Taking a year off and returning at age 39? With Jonathan Quick two wins from the Stanley Cup? Sounds crazy to most of us, but Thomas doesn't care what we think.

Sorry TT but JQuick's got this.........

I always thought pretty highly of TT the way he battled as a nomad, bouncing around and then winning the Vezina and Cup but he's really alienating himself since this time last year.

uh.....yeah, thanks Timmy, there are lovely parting gifts out there. Did he even play in the last Olympics?

The last line in this story pretty much sums it up.

Ultimately, he'll care what people think. Boston fans aren't going to forgive the fact that there's $XXM on the payroll next season for a top tier goalie who isn't playing because of the "Three F's". I'm sure there's plenty of B's fans out there who'll have a more than three f-yous to TT.

In other goalie news the Pens sign Vokoun for 2 years.

HA. To back up or start? ;)

Wow - that's pretty shocking to be honest. I figured Vokoun would be lobbying for a starting position somewhere given his track record (not including last year). I guess he realizes he's at the tail end of his career and is okay with being the backup.

When it comes to the media that much is obvious.

2 years at $2million a year should ease his pain a little.

Was Johnson that bad last year as backup?

June 5, 2012  09:32 AM ET

Starting is the problem.
Since 06-07 he's started 67, 40 (injury35 NHL 5AHL), 62 (Cup), 67,65, 67.
Vokoun will get 25-30 starts, Fleury doesn't get burned out. Shame though because I really like Johnson, but towards the end he was a guaranteed loss in net.

Thomas gearing up for Olympic run?

He's a bit fat for the marathon and a lot slow for the 100 metres.

June 5, 2012  10:15 AM ET

Five days in a row ..... and counting! Is Forsberg (or Sundin) planning a come back soon?

TT would only participate in the Lympics if he could compete as an "independent" anyways ;-)

If Quick's 2012-2013 season is as good as this year's, the job is basically his.

Don't forget the US National Team will probably rehired Burkie as GM.

And ya can't fix stupid.

I think we beat the TT horse to death yesterday...
