Cubs top pick already playing hardball

08:17 AM ET 06.06 | At this rate, rebuilding won't be easy in Chicago. The No. 6 pick in the draft is slotted at $3.25 million under the new Major League Baseball draft rules, but Cubs' first-round pick Albert Almora appears to be looking for more. ... Almora is being advised by super-agent Scott Boras, who is trying to get his client the most money possible, using college as leverage. The Cubs have a bonus pool of $7,933,900 for their 12 picks in the first 10 rounds, but teams can spread their money around and still stay below the total budget. It figures to be a difficult signing for Cubs President Theo Epstein, who was looking for an impact player, but now has to deal with an impact agent with a history of playing hardball. Almora said he's "sure" he's ready to play in the majors.

Something's gotta give with the MLB draft. It's hard enough to project talent as it is already. Having to deal with this mess of projecting whether or not they'll sign based on the league appointed is ridiculous. If a player enters the draft, they should really be declared ineligible to play college.

Theo has had plenty of experience dealing with Boras.

'Almora said he's "sure" he's ready to play in the majors.'
Well that's nice. Too bad playing in the majors doesn't depend on your opinion, draftee.

That's what's tough about the MLB draft...guys can always decide to go to college and could get drafted every year, giving themselves a better chance to end up in a better position. Meantime a team really in need of talent wasted a prime draft choice only to be told to either pay through the nose or go without yet again.

I have little sympathy for either side in this.

To me in the baseball draft there is no such thing as a impact player. All of these kids see the big money being handed to MLB players and in their minds they think they deserve the same kind of money. Agents are ruining MLB and no seems to want to stop them from doing so.

You seriously have to let it go. It was funny maybe the first couple of times, but you've really lost it since.

I bet he'd rather be sitting in the dentist's chair than dealing with Boras.
