08:04 AM ET 06.07 | Detroit won't be expecting Cliff Avril to show up for mandatory minicamp next week, but they will leave a door open for him. "We know he's working hard and we'd like to have him back out here," coach Jim Schwartz said Wednesday before heading out to the first tee at TPC Michigan to start the 22nd annual Detroit Lions Invitational. "But business is business. As soon as we can, we will welcome him right back and hope that he will pick up right where he left off last season." Avril has until July 16 to sign the $10.6 million franchise tender. In the meantime, he is hoping to work out a long-term deal with the Lions. If he doesn't sign the tender or reach an agreement on a long-term deal, he would have to sit out the season.

Good stuff here..... Really.

He's a solid player who had a great year and with the recent incidents by Fairley I would say that working on a long term deal is a priority!

I like that this has been low profile. Also, Schwartz's comments lead me to believe that this is something Detroit is working on.

The Lions are leading the league right now in "arrests."
The NFL are definitely keeping some interesting stats, but apparently not "concussions."

They passed, now they're with the big boys. They've had some heartbreak on the field themselves, though. Chuck Hughes, I remember I was listening on the radio...

Had a football poster in my cellar I "won" through a promotion by Scholastic Books, with a Lions- Redskins game (of all things!), and Hughes with his back to the camera, blocking on a pass play, while the Redskins rushed in. That was the first death of a player I remember actually occurring in a game.

But for heartbreak, I think having Millen as their GM was probably more excruciating.

I remember the announcers voice broke when they were pumping his chest. Also only one I know of.
