Conflicting reports on Brees signing

08:00 AM ET 06.08 | Despite some optimistic local reports Thursday, there are still signs that a contract for Drew Brees may take more time. A source close to Brees confirmed an ESPN report that the Saints sent a new contract proposal to Brees, but the source said negotiations are still ongoing. It was not clear how much the Saints' offer had changed, but it was clear that the gap between the two sides hasn't been closed entirely. Earlier on Thursday, two sources also refuted more optimistic reports from WWL Radio and FOX 8 that suggested a deal could be done as early as Friday or Monday. The best advice for the overly-stressed members of the Who Dat Nation would be to brace yourselves for the possibility that this deal won't get done before [July 16].

Not sure why a franchise that is already in so much turmoil and uncertainty would appear to willingly bring more of the same upon itself. Sign him already and move on to prepare for the season.

Make him an offer he can't refuse... put a bounty on him if he doesn't sign...

Anyone think he might just want to miss training, after all Goodell pretty much shot them in the foot for the season.

Do the Saints really think they have any leverage here? Or does the ongoing contract negotiations qualify as 'positive news' for this team nowadays?

CJ2K>>>DBWon'tPlay...nothing going on in that training camp that he can't overcome in three weeks of exhibition games......

Doesn't she dance at the Foxy Lady?

No Drew, eh? Well, cut to the Chase. Or, as Elton John would say, "It looks like Daniels."

Hmmmmm.....

I was looking at it from the "horse's head" aspect, but yeah, Brees in SF would change the whole balance of power in the NFC.

But it does sound like the 2 sides are getting close. This deal will probably get done by the start of traiing camp. By NFL Kickoff weekend this whole thing will be much ado about nothing.

Sounds to me like the Saints have decided that they're very unlikely to be competitive enough this year, so they're free to negotiate with Brees as a separate issue. Worst case in this scenario, should they manage to get to preseason or even Opening Day without signing Brees (highly unlikely), Daniel gets some more playing time under his belt.
