08:22 AM ET 06.08 | In a sign of the times, Colorado's David Jones inked a new deal, reportedly coming in at four years and $16 million. Did the Avs overpay to keep a guy who scored 37 points last season and wasn't always among top six forwards? Probably, they did a bit, yes. But that's always what happens when you sign your potential UFA guys. You have to pay a premium to keep them off the open market. ... [He's] scored 20 or more goals the last two years. Those guys don't grow on trees anymore in the NHL. He's got a good, accurate shot. He's a smart player for the most part. He's scored 20 or more goals the last two years. I would say this: Jones needs to stay on a line with Paul Stastny.

If this sets the market price for 20 goal scoring wingers, it probably put PA Parentaeu at like $4.5M per season. Looks like he'll walk from the Isles. Thanks Avs!!

Just as long as it wasn't front loaded. That's the important thing to B-irk.

Good point. He scored 40 with the Isles, cashed in and sucked since.

The NHL should get something in their CBA like the NFL has, where they can cut a player if he isn't performing. What's the incentive to go all out when you've got more money guaranteed for the next three years than a normal person would spend in three lifetimes?

He would probably have commanded a bigger contract on the open market.

A Central Pillar in the Spiny Norman platform/
But....the other side of this is, that owners must also be accountable for trying to put a competitive team on the ice. Or...as in Futbol...you get relegated

The only one I'm thinking of now is Fluery. Maybe if Sid can play a whole season without getting his bell wrung he'll earn his pay.
