Mavs have trade sweetener

09:25 AM ET 06.09 | The Mavericks have big decisions to make before the NBA draft June 28, and free agency begins July 1. But no decision may be bigger than what to do with center Brendan Haywood. It's been widely speculated that the Mavericks will use the one-time amnesty provision to remove Haywood from the salary cap. But a rare clause in Haywood's contract could make that move unnecessary. Haywood has what one NBA executive called "the best spread provision in the NBA'' in his contract. In layman's terms, any team that waives Haywood can spread out the payments for the remainder of his contract until 2026, according to an NBA source. That means the team that owns his rights and waives him would be responsible for no more than $2 million per year over the next 14 years. That clause in the deal is a huge incentive when it comes to including Haywood as a possible sweetener in trade talks that are going fast and furious as teams gear up for the frenzy that will begin as soon as the NBA finals end. Other teams see that as a very appealing contract.

Regardless of what we do with his contract, he and his half **** effort will be gone before next season.
This makes me happy.

Mavs will probably look a lot different next season. They have some nice accessories that will be spread all over the league, too.

Cuban shouldn't have any qualms with getting rid of Haywood at any cost. He only unloaded half his team on a humble and hope. I hope Mark knows what he's doing, the verdict is still out on him. That championship did give'm some leaway!

Realistically, there are only 2 teams that can win a championship in thext 2-3 years. Thunder and Heat.
Teams like Dallas, Lakers, Celtics, Magic all have the pedigree to reload fast, however...
- There is ONLY one Howard
- There is ONLY one Deron Williams
- Kobe will be on the downhill, joined by Dirk, Paul
- Rose is always hurt and IMO will never be the same again.Chicago's window is closed (Boozer sucks)
A LOT of things should fall in place for Dallas to instantly contend again. I', not sure if it's practical to think all those would happen. Advantage Thunder and the Heat.

OT - Howard is locked up for one more year. As much as I would love to see him here with the Mavs, I don't see Haywood's contract as a significant piece that makes it happen.
I still say that if he goes anywhere, it's to the Lakers for Bynum (along with whatever pieces from either side make such a deal workable...)
