The Marlins are in discussions with veteran left fielder Luis Gonzalez about potentially joining the team, his agent said Thursday. Gonzalez, 40, would provide a solid veteran backup to left fielder Josh Willingham and first baseman Mike Jacobs, and could step in if either player is injured.

I will always remember this guy as having the biggest hit in 2001. game 7 bottom of the ninth. Secondly is that game hitting streak he had over 30 games.

Too bad the D-Backs didnt have room on the roster to keep him. He was my favorite D-Back.

Why marlins? this guy would be a nice platoon guy with reed johnson up here in the great white north (blue jays)

Anyone else suspicious of this cat's dropoff in production last few years?

January 11, 2008  08:55 AM ET

Tim:

Thing is, he's a likeable guy, you want to root for him. Just suspicious of him.

Guys some things to look for, scaley skin.....discoloration.....bumps all over the skin.....oh ****

January 11, 2008  10:01 AM ET

January 11, 2008  11:35 AM ET

yeah..what happend to tradeing away all the vets for young players we ahve no idea who they are until a couple of years later when the win the world series

January 11, 2008  12:18 PM ET

If the Marlins are a triple AAA team what does that make the Mets?

January 11, 2008  12:25 PM ET

a AAA team that relly knows how to lose when it counts...

January 11, 2008  01:14 PM ET

If I was a good player like that I would not want to go to the marlins they need alot of work and they dont have what it takes to have a player like that on there team. If I was a MLB player I would not even go to a team like that ..

I beat thats what u said the season they won the world series with all thoose young players. Watch it stab in ur back now.

January 11, 2008  03:11 PM ET

First off when the Marlins won in 2003, they had a lot of excellent young pitchers at the time. Josh Beckett, AJ Burnett, and Carl Pavano (before he got injured 100 times), Brad Penny, Mark Redman, Dontrelle Willis. With a pitching staff like that you better win the world series. Anyways, none of those players are on the marlins anymore.

Secondly, why would Luis Gonzalez want to play second fiddle to a bunch of kids half his age?
Third, why would the Marlins want to pay Gonzalez (a washed up, former steroid user) a bunch of millions to sit on the bench?

January 11, 2008  03:11 PM ET

Just doesn't make sense

January 11, 2008  03:25 PM ET

I think this deal makes a lot of sense. With the numbers dropping off the last couple of years and his age increasing Gonzalez probably can't get a decent contract with a winning team (face it, when you're that age you tend to put winning above all else).

He'll platoon half the season with the Marlins and rest up for the second half. At the trade deadline the Marlins will ship him to the highest bidder, gaining at least one prospect in the process.

It's a smart move, both Gonzales and the Marlins win.
Immediately the Marlins get a veteran bat and a virtual lock to ship him away midway for a prospect while Gonzales has the chance to show he can still play and be moved to a championship contender later in the season.

I've always been very suspsicious of this guy. Similar to Brady Anderson. All reports say he's a good clubhouse guy and a family man.

another note...I remember reading that he had triplets. Would that be a product of some fertilization due to the ill effects of steriod use on the nads?

Everyone in this era is suspect. And anyone who's production jumped like his is very suspect.

January 11, 2008  09:33 PM ET

Couldn't the Padres use a guy like Gonzo? Sign him, Podsednik and another outfielder and figure one or two will pan out.

January 11, 2008  11:56 PM ET

Hey J17, farm team? I thought they were defunct?

January 14, 2008  09:34 PM ET

Gonzo won't play second fiddle. He tried to kill the development of the Dodger outfielders (Ethier and Kemp) even though they were producing better than he. He started crap in the clubhouse the moment he wasn't getting all the starts he thought he should have. Florida should take him: they're not going to contend next year anyway, and it will increase the attention toward moving any good outfield prospect they have.
