08:26 AM ET 06.11 | Though he's played fewer than 30 games since January 2011, Sidney Crosby's next blockbuster payday is still coming -- it's just a matter of how much. And while negotiations aren't really allowed to start yet, it's probably natural that the two sides have floated some informal information back and forth about each other's ideas and desires. James Mirtle, reputable journalist out Toronto, tweeted about what Elliotte Friedman said on TV: "So @FriedgeHNIC reports on Satellite Hotstove Crosby will likely get something close to 10-year deal near July 1. Could be $9-million cap hit." We'll see if there's any truth to the chatter.

Pittsburgh really has their hands tied here, don't they. On the one hand, he's supposedly the "face of the league", led them to a Cup, virtually saved the franchise. On the other, he's become the concussion poster boy, less than 30 games in 17 months, nobody is sure of what he's still capable of even if he can play a full season, and now he's likely to become one of the top 2 highest paid in the league, locked up for essentially his career. That's a lot committed to one guy who may not even be the best player on his own team anymore.

I don't think he needs to get paid that kind of money ... yet. Lets see if he's healthy first.

First, this is all just speculation. I don't think that there is a team in the league that would give him $9 million a year for 10 years with his recent concussion history. I really hope that Shero isn't that dumb.
Second, if it got down to Sid demanding that kind of money, I don't think too many people in Pittsburgh would feel bad if Shero said thanks for the memories and let him go. I'd be more in favor of keeping Gino and the rest of the team intact rather than bust the cap on Sid.

Nope. He should get paid, but should want to take a little of a discount so he can keep a good team around him. Front load a deal why you can before the CBA changes it so he gets paid but the cap hit is reasonable.
Also read that this contract wouldn't be able to be insured because of his concussion problems.

When he plays he is the best - Ovechkin gave him a run the first couple of years, but Ovie got his pay day and invested in vodka or something because he has disappeared sadly. I would be afraid of a long term contract with Sid, but I wouldn't be afraid of paying him the big bucks - he is worth it.

Crosby has said he wants to be here, and this is his home. He will take a discount. He makes and has made plenty of money with endorsements, etc. Pens' fans should worry about Staal's and Geno's contract renewals. If the contract is iron clad with injury clauses in there, etc., Shero will make that a seven year deal, not ten. Which won't make everyone happy, but will meet in the middle.

Those are of course, all of the right things to say, and they may indeed be true. But if negotiations get shall we say....difficult....it may be another matter

It isn't about saying the right things all the time.
We have had these discussions here before. Money is everything to some players. Not everything to others. I will be the most surprised if Sid makes it everything, but I wouldn't blame him. It is his third contract. He should get as much as he can, and if it isn't here, God Bless him. However, IMHO, I don't see him playing anywhere else knowing/hearing what I know/hear. Although, my opinion is clearly biased.
