08:11 AM ET 06.12 | Good news, Cards fans. Chris Carpenter will return to the mound later this week for the first time since mid-March, barring a setback in a strength-and-conditioning program to support a right shoulder affected by a nerve disorder. Carpenter said Sunday the Cardinals' training staff has yet to provide a specific day for his first bullpen throw but that he expects it to occur during the team's current homestand. The staff co-ace described his progress as "100 percent positive" since he resumed throwing off flat ground last month. Carpenter has been throwing every day, including weekends, whether the team has been at home or on the road. "Where I'm at right now compares to where I'm at when I start preparing myself to go to spring training," said Carpenter. ... "I feel great."

This is encouraging. I won't hold my breath, but if we can get a healthy Carpenter back in the rotation in August and September, it would be huge.

They certainly need him....no one is running away with the Central, and if the Cards hang around they may be in the mix come September.

A healthy Carpenter is great news for down the road BUT it they don't get their bullpen fix right now it won't matter when he comes back.

Baseball coaches and their traditional, set in concrete way of thinking, LOL. Throwing on flat ground, ooooh, it might hurt his arm to throw off a mound. Why not have the dude start throwing long toss to develop arm strength? No, that goes against the grain of traditionalists!
