MLB's hottest trade commodity

08:14 AM ET 06.12 | More playoff teams mean more playoff races, which mean fewer teams getting ready to sell this time of year. My list would include the Cubs, Padres, Rockies, Mariners, A's and perhaps the Twins and Royals. Every other team -- including the Astros -- can easily claim they're still chasing the postseason. But when you run down the possible trade chips on those teams, there isn't much out there to excite your rumor mills. Which is why teams in need of a starting pitcher should be going after Ryan Dempster now. ... [Unless] the Cubs decide to part with fellow starter Matt Garza, Dempster appears to be the guy on the market this year, unless we see some creative contender-contender deals.

Run Dumpster.

I thought it was Youk.

This guy's relatively underrated. Over the last four years, he's averaged over 200 innings per season with a better than average ERA. That's a valuable piece.

He's 35 and in his last year of his contract with the Cubs; I'd be surprised if he plays out the season there.

If I was the Red Sox, I would package Ellsbury in a deal as soon as he gets healthy and go after a real ace pitcher, like King Felix. He is by far their biggest chip.

Expect the Yankees to be involved............

Yanks have Sabathia, Pettitte, Kuroda, Nova, and Hughes. They won't add Dempster. Don't need him.

Considering Ellsbury will be unsignable, that isn't such a bad idea.

No point for the Cubs to hang on to him... will be interesting to see what they're asking for in return. My guess is a 2nd tier prospect.

Yep any WS contender has to hang on to an arm like Hughes. What's not to like? 2012 ERA of 4.76, giving up 2 HRs per 9 innings this season. Add to that the last time he had an ERA below 4 was the 2009 season. He's definitely untouchable in a trade scenario.
