08:21 AM ET 06.12 | Red Wings GM Ken Holland was left without many choices. [Holland] and defenseman Brad Stuart talked Sunday morning in what was sort of a last-ditch attempt by the Wings to keep their workhorse. The writing had been on the wall all season, though, as Stuart made it clear he wanted to play closer to his family in San Jose, Calif. So Holland did what he could to at least get something out of losing Stuart, trading his rights to the Sharks. ... "I've talked to Brad Stuart several times over the last couple of days, made him an offer -- Stuie wanted to hit July 1," Holland said. "Everybody is aware he missed his family in California." Holland spoke with San Jose general manager Doug Wilson last week, and the two worked out a deal.

A football play to keep a hockey player? No wonder it didn't work

Let him go Kenny. If he'd rather play for the Sharks he's unbalanced anyway.

But this is about a hockey player who didn't want to play for Detroit. It has caused a radical altering of the force.

But see, here's the genius of Holland. He dealt the rights to Stuart so that he doesn't become a FA on July 1 and thus be a FA that DOESN'T want to come to Detroit. Therefore, every FA still wants to come to Detroit. Genius.

June 12, 2012  11:33 AM ET

I guess the precedence now is when your about to hit FA and you want to play close to home just demand a trade. Next thing you know they'll be trading players to the KHL who are homesick . Stuart is a panzy

This Motowner gives B Stuart his best wishes for the San Jose leg of his career and thanks for his contributions to the Winged Wheel and to hockey. He has earned the respect of teammates and opponents, fans, and hockey people.

A journeyman at best. Didn't he spend a number of years with the Sharks once before.
