Devils' scapegoat: 'I wish I could take it back'

08:24 AM ET 06.12 | A two-game turnaround was largely undone in five short minutes Monday night by Steve Bernier. From the moment the New Jersey Devils forward tried to make defenseman Rob Scuderi as one with the boards, the Kings could begin clearing space in the trophy case for the Stanley Cup. Bernier received five minutes for roughing and was ejected when Scuderi suffered a cut after being slammed face first into the boards. The Kings turned the penalty into three goals and an insurmountable lead. ... Bernier sat in the locker room and listened to the Staples Center foghorn announce each Kings goal. "I didn't watch the game on TV," Bernier said. "I listened to the crowd. That was hard, for sure. I could hear how it was going. I wish I could take it back."

Scapegoat?
When last i checked, this was a team game, and I believe you win and lose as a team.

But you have to point a finger at someone right?

No scapegoat. i don't blame him for finishing the check. On my list of blame, it was ref first, if you call the first boarding on Stoll the second doesn't take place. As Theo Fleury said last night, Scuderi put himself in a bad position. It was unfortunate that Bernier will get blame, but not by me. He was part of a great 4th line.
Kudos to the Kings.

While it was a dumb play by Bernier, the Devils laid an egg on the penalty kill. Give up a goal is one thing, but giving up three is unforgivable.

I agree with everything you said. He was a big part of them even being there...

I';m sure Nard would disagree. If the Devils had won, I wouldhave had to keep it till the season started

It wasn't so much the severity of the itself but more the result.

Don't think anybody that knows hockey would make him the scapegoat...it was a stupid penalty to take, but it is what it is. There's no excuse for being so putrid on the pk...and let's not forget that LA's pp isn't exactly their strong suit. So alot of players forgot to show up at a crucial moment of the game and on top of it they got how many shots? 17? 18? Not gonna win alot playing like that.
Soooooooooooooo....congrats Kings. Well deserved Cup and an amazing run.

Nor do I it is a team game and the team will take penalties you have to be able to kill them. Unfortunately there are many people that feel a finger must be pointed somewhere.

So did his partner Ron. He did. But players do it all the time. Nothing Bernier could do. If Scuderi keeps skating around the boards, instead of turning his back he gets a normal check. It is why I don't blame Bernier

for better or for worse the nhl has always been a league that suspends the retaliatory hit, punch, check....it's less obvious than it used to be, but the refs still have the tendency to put on blinders on one play & then somehow have hawkeye vision 2 seconds later. Still, seemed pretty obvious that Bernier went in for a measure of payback. That he intended to do that and get a 5 min, def not...but had he been playing to play instead of playing with the motive of wallpapering a guy he probably would be awares enough to pull back somewhat on the hit. Was a pretty textbook hit from behind & once in that position I don't think that it was very difficult or unwarranted to give a 5 min.
