Epstein says Red Sox lost their way

08:20 AM ET 06.14 | Regrets, he has a few. Theo Epstein calls it The Monster, and he doesn't mean Fenway Park's famed left field wall. It's what the Red Sox became on his watch, a baseball beast with an insatiable appetite for wins, fans, money, ratings, fame. He helped create it and admits it eventually got the best of him. It continues to leave its mark, creating the unfair perception that he left the Red Sox in a shambles when he departed. ... After shrewdly building two champions through the draft, seemingly minor free agent signings, and trades, he concluded his tenure with big-money signings that flew in the face of his principles because he wanted to win now as much as those in the organization hoping to see the brand soar higher and higher.

Why Tomase has a job is beyond me.

The 2004 team wasn't "built thru the draft", and who was drafted was by Duquette since Epstein didn't even start until after the 2002 season.

Damn Tomase, you suck, now it's just a matter of how much you suck.

I sense you're holding back there Schad ... why don't you tell us how you really feel?

Drew, Lackey, Crawford, yep. Last good acquisition by Epstein: Mike Aviles.

True, I should stop holding back, isn't good for the BP.

That's far from an unfair perception. If he wants to take credit for the WS titles, then he must also take the blame for the mess he created before he left.

Ozzie is closing in on a meltdown, was seen yelling at Heath Bell in the clubhouse after the game.

Please consider the source.

John Tomase.

Quite possibly the worst "reporter" out there. The same guy who invented the story about the Pats taping the Rams walkthru and later had to admit he lied, yet still has a job.

I think the popular perception is that the Sox farm system is bereft of talent. That is not an accurate statement.

Well. He does work in MA and for the Herald. So what do you expect.

Too bad it didn't happen before the Sox left town.

Losing 8 of 9 at home will cause one.

Dice-K and Wiley-Mo has gotta be mentioned in his hall-of-shame signings/trades. Was he responsible for bringing in Ortiz? I forget.

Theo did have his moments with getting Shilling and Beckett/Lowell, but one can argue that move was luck and we gave up too much to get them. It set the shortstop position back years and years, and lost a potential mega-star at a position that has a short-supply of stars in the league.

His pursuit of Arod was immensely stupid, even at the time and moreso with hindsight. He should have traded Papelbon 2-3 years ago to get value from him and let Bard close. I did like the gonzalez signing, though he should have gotten that deal deal a year or two earlier.

They actually have some very good sports writers, Tomase must have pics of the editorial board, some llamas, with a pile of white powder.

Gotta be more than that.

I'm sure some dead bodies are involved in those pics.
