Hot coaching prospect on Oilers radar

08:31 AM ET 06.14 | Earlier this week, a story out of Washington tied Jon Cooper, at least loosely, to the Capitals' coaching search. Everywhere he coaches, he wins. Midget AAA in Michigan, junior in two different leagues, in the pros with the Norfolk Admirals in the American Hockey League. He's a rising star. Would the Edmonton Oilers ever hire Cooper? Who knows? He grew up in Prince George, went to school in the U.S. on a lacrosse scholarship, worked on Wall Street, then got his law degree and opened his own practice, before hockey took over his life and he decided to do it full-time about nine years ago. At the least, the Oilers should be interviewing the young bright coach. ... Cooper has time left on his Tampa Bay contract, either one or two years.

He must have been a lousy lawyer.

Unless the talent level was obscene in Norfolk, I think the Oilers should give this guy a shot. Norfolk were an absolute juggernaut in the AHL this year and if he had much to do with it, then he's definitely NHL worthy.

Not every coach can make the jump though, just like players. Some guys are probably better in the minors, (i.e. with younger players. more in a teaching mode)

that's redundant

I'm still trying to figure out what happened to the Admirals. Halfway through the season they were a decent team that was playing reasonably well. At some point in January everything clicked and they couldn't be beat. They kept playing like that the rest of the season and right through the playoffs. Two excellent goalies with a GAA of less than 2 definitely helped, but that team was unbelievable the second half of the season.

No saying he was a crooked lawyer would be redundant.

He doesn't have a wiki page, how good can he be?

Right. He must have been lousy because he wasn't crooked enough.

Having a lawyer coaching the Oilers might not be a bad idea. "Hey, ref! That was a lousy call! It cost us the game! I'll see you in court, zebra!" Or, "Hey, Alice, if you don't start playing like a man I'll sue you for impersonating one!"

Hmmm! I like it already!

But think of it..if Lawyer Jon benches a guy he can tell him he is out for 2 games.( half a game for poor play, half a game for coaches time watching bad play on tape, half a game for using up space on bench with no production, and half a game for administrative costs associated with the benching)

You never can tell with "prospects" like this until they do make the jump.
The Pens have'nt faired too poorly. I might also recall another fellow who worked in the real life (Law Enforcement actually) before he made it to the NHL Show and didn't do too bad a job at it...(R.I.P Pat.)

I'll take a Law Enforcement Officer over a lawyer any day.

Agree. With Khabibulan on the roster a lawyer/coach might not be a bad thing.
