Cubs ready to deal Dempster quickly

08:20 AM ET 06.15 | How soon before the rebuild? Some rival executives consider the Cubs one of the few teams -- if not the only one -- decisively in seller's mode almost seven weeks before the trading deadline. And that could prompt a team in need of a starting pitcher to strike fast with a strong offer for somebody such as Ryan Dempster, one exec said Wednesday -- a pace of action that only seemed more plausible with Dempster's lengthy, visible conversation with team president Theo Epstein before batting practice. The New York Yankees and Los Angeles Dodgers are among the likeliest landing spots, say baseball insiders. Dempster, who has said he would consider waiving his no-trade rights, is only one of at least a half-dozen Cubs who could be traded by the deadline.

Bidders, line up!

but will Theo want to deal with them?

He's been consistent - hate to see him go.

I figure the Jays should be at the front of the line for this guy if they have any aspirations of making a run this year. He's a veteran who could help the Jays right now with Morrow out. He's also pretty old, so the asking price shouldn't be sky high. And he's Canadian, so the puzzle pieces seem to fit. The Jays have pieces and prospects to move too, so I can't see why this wouldn't happen.

Question is, are they willing to overpay for Dempster with prospects. Is he really worth it?

June 15, 2012  11:03 AM ET

And just what do they think the Yankees have that they would give up for him? Cashman is still smarting from the Montero deal. H has to be a little gun shy. No, a lot gun shy.

If you are the Cubs and you have to pick between these two clubs there is only one choice LA better minor league talent.

Why wouldn't he? Question is what prospects, that is the only question.

Really the question becomes what will they give from what they have vs what someone else will give. And the Yankees have some good talent as well. Not sure I want to see the Yankees give up much at this point.

He is 35 years old in the last year of his contract. Add that into any equation.

So they shouldn't expect much...

the cubs got to get whatever for dempster, after all for the cubs has been a trade year,,

June 15, 2012  12:24 PM ET

I don't think Epstein will deal with us because we're just not hard up enough for his liking. We're doing OK with the guys we have. We even have guys that can step in once in a while if Andy Pettitte needs a rest. Maybe LA or Texas could use him and have guys they can trade that woulld interest Epstein.

I'm not sure why the Bronx would be considered a likely landing spot ... the whole rotation has come around and they're pitching well from top to bottom. The only pitcher really faltering right now is Sabathia, and they're not replacing him with anyone anytime soon.

June 15, 2012  01:00 PM ET

Theo and Jed would be smart to trade him ASAP. Dempster has already been on the DL this year, and Sveum understandably wants to pitch him as late into his starts as possible due to the Cubbies' atrocious bullpen. Not good for a 35 year old arm. Another thing that hurts his trade value is the change in the Collective Bargaining Agreement. If Dempster, a free agent, doesn't sign with the team he is traded to at the end of this year, they no longer get a compensatory pick for the rent-a-player.
