08:21 AM ET 06.16 | Sour grapes? Coaching legend Phil Jackson says in an upcoming HBO interview he would not have taken the Knicks job because he believed the Carmelo Anthony-Amare Stoudemire pairing has made for a "clumsy team." However, later in the interview, which will air Tuesday on "Real Sports with Bryant Gumbel," Jackson admits he had given the Knicks job plenty of thought and calls it "special," according to excerpts provided to The Post. "They never called, and I kind of appreciate that," Jackson said. "Because if they called, it would open the door and they didn't want to open the door. "I wasn't going to take that job, that's for sure," he added. Why? "There's just too much work that has to be done with that team," he said. "You know? It's just not quite - it's clumsy. It's a little bit of a clumsy team."

Ouch! Don't know why sour grapes would be brought up. PJ could have his choice of teams to coach or possiby even GM!

If he knows the Knicks don't have the right personnel, why not take the job and fix the problem.

This Phony wants to coach the Heat. But he can't.

So Brooks better watch his back if OKC loses in the finals.

QUOTE(#4):

That's not the coaches job. It's the GM that gets the players. The Knicks have failed at getting the kind of talent Jackson is used to "coaching". PJ only takes teams that have top 5 talent and usually more than one top 5er. The NYK's are not even close to that level and are stuck with contracts, injuries, and one dimensional players.

Oh trust me I know he won't take a job that requires actual coaching which is why he is a Phony.

A real coach wouldn't see that as a problem, but yet an opportunity to show his real skills.

If he was so good he should be able to turn two gifted athletes into to winners, he did it before didn't he?

Phony Phil wants everyone to believe he made MJ and Pip great or Kobe and Shaq great.

So if he did lets see him turn these two stars into great players and win more titles.

This dude is a Phony and overrated and he should sit down somewhere, the game has past him by.

I can appreciate Jackson's candidness and honesty. This does not absolves my displeasure with the present regime of Dolan, Grunwald, Woodson & secretly Zeke Thomas. They could have at least attempted to go after Jackson, Sloan, Shaw or even JVG again. But no, this regime, true to form, kept it in house with the hiring of an inflated Woodson hire. This guy will not get the Knicks past the 2nd round and it shows that Dolan is only interested in filling the arena and not truly competing for a championship. This thing with the marketing of Lin and Stat to fill the Garden only appeases those who wish the Knicks no success and continue to laugh at us as a dysfunctional outfit, or to just forefill the individual hate campaigns. In any event, the Dolan regime is quite the outfit and continues to demostrate to loyal Knicks fans their lack of interest in putting championship caliber talent on the playing court. Sad and disgraceful IMO!

The guy already has a bad heart. The 'Bricks' would kill him. And I still say that at his age, he doesn't want to be 3000 miles away from Jeanie.

Given the bad ticker, so could Jeanie, but a nice way to go.

Dude, get a grip.

Phil has EARNED his right to pick and choose who he wants to coach, or trash.

If you wanna believe that he played NO part in MJ's success or Kobe's success, then have at it. You are entitled to it, however dumb that may be. Rest assured, MJ, Kobe , Shaq DONT share your opinion. Ask Kobe NOW, on how he feels about brown, and how he would DIE to have PJ back!!!!!

PJ is 100% right. EVERYONE including Melo knows that Amare and Melo combo is not a winning pairing. Especially given how poorly the rest of the pieces have failed fit.
On top of that, I have NOOOO clue why Knicks settled for Woodson (I know the NYK fans will come thumping their chests with the last season "success'). If Knicks are really serious about winning a ring, they need to get a REAL coach that can HELP them win a ring, NOT be happy to make the playoffs. That's for the Hawks LOL

I agree PJ is overrated and only takes on teams with top 5 players nearing or at their prime. Melo and Stat don't meet his criteria. Also, if the "triangle offense" was so great, why do other teams not run it?

He is being nice in what he is saying. What he really means is "You know? It's just not quite - it's a team owned by a moron. Dolan's a little bit ... oh well a lot ... of a moron."

What are you talking about? Woodson is the only thing they've done that made sense. Atlanta hadn't been to the playoffs in 10 years when Woodson took over. It's not Woodson's fault that he was overruled in his decision to draft Chris Paul.

Why would Phil take on this headache, knowing that Isiah Thomas is in Dolan's ear?
