Coach K: Paterno's firing a horrible mistake

09:40 AM ET 06.16 | Duke coach Mike Krzyzewski shared a candid conversation on everything from Team USA and the Blue Devils to Joe Paterno and Penn State on Friday's "Piers Morgan Tonight." "Probably the only person that could rival you in reputation for college sport was Joe Paterno, and his career came to this awful, tragic end," offers Piers Morgan. "How did you feel about that, as someone that knew him well, worked in a parallel world to him for a long time?" "It was horrible, and I've respected Coach Paterno my entire life and had a chance to get to know him really well in the last year of his life," says Krzyzewski. "I thought it was really not well done in handling the situation that - it's a difficult situation to encounter." Having coached the Blue Devils since 1980, in the process winning four National Championships and 13 ACC Tournaments, Krzyzewski is in many ways synonymous with Duke University. Paterno's association with Penn State is remarkably similar, and "Coach K" says it was grossly undervalued: "You had somebody who's given six decades of service to the university and done such an incredible job. Somehow, you have to let - something has to play out and respect the fact that you've gone through all these experiences for six decades," he insists. "It doesn't just go out the window right at the end. I thought it was a real mistake by Penn State's leadership."

Anything that he had done for the university is now overshadowed by Sandusky's sickening crimes. Paterno should have done more.

I understand K's point even though I'm not sure that I agree with it. Paterno should minimally have been suspended for a year and other sanctions applied. Was firing him too extreme? Perhaps. And the way it was done was clumsy.

Funny how a few dozen cases of CHILD MOLESTATION oversahdows some damn wins in college athletics. Sorry Coach K, you are wrong on this one.

I could give a s-H_T if it were a coach or a chief of staff at a hospital that cured cancer. IF this happens on your watch and you knew or should have known and not stopped it.......the hell with you and your reputation.

Coach K, let Wojokowski go mollest a few kids and hide it for him & see what the fine folks in North Carolina do to you

Yes I totally agree. It's very hard to imagine that Paterno worked right next to this guy for 20/30 years and didn't know what kind of man Sandusky was/is!!!!! IMO Paterno was just as bad as Sandusky!!!!!!

I agree with this Sir. How are you WPS and how is the little one?

Doing great, 0-6! Little on is 8 months old. She sleeps great and is a REALLY happy baby. Really laid back and easy to care for. Good thing, when you have an "OH S_H-IT" baby at 40, it's nice for God to give you an easy one.

More important, how's your health? You taking care of yourself? We all worry about you............

June 16, 2012  11:02 AM ET

Sorry Coach K. The only thing I agree with you on is how the Penn State leadership handled it. Other than that, I can't agree with you on this one...but I know you won't lose any sleep over me not agreeing with you.

Coach K only has to look at what Duke did with its lacrosse coach a few years ago. You are judged not only by what your players and coaches do for you on the field but also by what the do away from it.

June 16, 2012  11:22 AM ET

Coach K has just lost any and all respect I might have had for him with this insanely obtuse comment. I don't care who or what Paterno did for how long at what school, he turned his back on kids being abused and he should have been thrown in jail and suffer similar abuses. Paterno, and anyone else who doesn't stop child abuse should be tortured. Is it just a Catholic thing? We can do whatever we want to kids and in the end just say a prayer and it's all good? Absolutely sickening.

I understand coach K's point, and, while I have a lot of respect for him, he's wrong on this one. Paterno should have done more when he found out what was going on. He had to go.

June 16, 2012  11:41 AM ET

Penn State was trying to cover up what was going on.They needed someone to haug this on so they went afer coach Paterno to cover their butts.Coach Paterno did report this to the higher ups but they blew him off.All this will come out in the wash and the higher ups will swing.

We are recovering from a really bad storm last night, 6 or 7 inches of rain, tore off an awning and blew it clean over the house and damaged my truck, downed trees and limbs, been at the clean up since six this am, done for now, don't remember, either 16, 17 or 18 truck loads of limbs, wow, and me not doing so hot either, had a tooth pulled this week, should have went somewhere on vacation for this week, huh.

Sorry SIR about your storm. We are fighting wildland fires and some gang bangers starting to burn down old building and a old Saw Mill and then we are getting shoot at like two days ago.I was thinking I was back in Nam but I could not shoot back. The FBI and ATF is all over this.

Thanks for asking, I and my very beautiful Wife are taking good care of me, best we can. I have a rough week, followed by a good/fair week, then two rough ones, and so on, still hanging. Having circutlation problems in lower body, docs can't get it above 35 to 45 percent, got me swelled in the feet and ankles, have to get it drained often, but the docs said not much more than can do and they are not too concerned for now, just on and on, it is caused by me having CHF, and am on meds for blood pressure too, I feel like a walking pill bottle, but I will hang in there, count on it, not ready to go yet, want to see 90, so I have a ways to go yet.

You're always in my prayers (assuming God knows who 0-6 REALLY is :-)!! Take care of yourself.

In Kansas City this AM....drove up here last night with my lovely bride. Half way to Omaha & headed there this morning to watch the CWS and follow my little piggies. Left the baby at home and 1 other for a baseball tourney....traveling w/ only 2 kids seems easy.

Take care of yourself and I'll try to check in on the boards while in Omaha....WPS!! GO HOGS GO!!

Joe Pa was in charge of a big cover up that went on for years at Happy Valley. It wasn't the pristine program that most people thought it to be.

June 16, 2012  12:15 PM ET

JoePa was just as bad as Sandusky? Now that's not only wrong but totally absurd.

Maybe I was a little harsh on Joe. I should have said, that Joe must have known what Sandusky was doing, hell he worked right along side of the man for 20/30 years!!!! Do we know for sure if Paterno talked to Sankusky after McQueary told Joe of the incident in the shower with Sandkusky and the kid??? Joe should have spoke with Sandusky about the incident.

JoePa was just as bad as Sandusky? Now that's not only wrong but totally absurd.

If Joe covered up for Sandusky, then he was just as guilty!!!
