Leafs leaning toward Luongo over Nash?

10:10 AM ET 06.16 | It's an intriguing time for GM Brian Burke and his staff as they contemplate the future. The expectation among many is that Burke is plotting aggressive ways of making sure the Leafs don't miss post-season play again next season eyeing a veteran goaltender (Roberto Luongo?) in search of quality veterans to bolster Dion Phaneuf and the leadership group in the Toronto dressing room and searching for ways to get the No. 1 pick in next week's draft. The likeliest scenario then is for something in between: - A play for Luongo that might cost one good prospect. - A mid-range NHL free agent. - An aggressive bid for unsigned Anaheim blueline prospect Justin Schultz. - No deal for Nash who may have scratched Toronto from his list of preferred destinations anyway. - No move up from No. 5 in the draft and therefore ending up with a blue-chip youngster who will be back in junior or Europe next season. The message? Staying the course no short-term fixes or at least none involving players who can only help for one or two years. Luongo, maybe, because he???s a long-term solution in the crease.

I just can't see Luongo costing that much. He has an albatross contract, big yearly cap hit and has demanded out of Vancouver. I could see the first or Gardiner, but just can't see both. I could see another player involved in that cost, as the Leafs would need to clear some cap to assume $6.75 mil.

When it comes to goalies, Toronto is Philadelphia North. When was the last time a good prospect goalie survived in either city?

Your pal, Don Cherry, should have tons of fun with his pal, Lulongo in T*****o.

That's the kind of contract His Irkness really likes. He might even add a year or three to 'pry' him out of Vancouver.

I would think that Vancouver would be willing to GIVE Luongo away...he's a cap killer for the Canucks. Getting rid of him is the prize. That being said, Luongo seems that he has no problem steering a top contender in the direction they are already headed in. Great. Other than making splits saves when in Florida (while still young & agile) he didn't lead that team anywhere. Not that it was all his fault, but he never proved that he can turn a pretender into a contender. Now he's over the hill and his diminishing skills are obvious to all. All that to say, I REALLY hope Toronto lands him.

VCR will NOT get a first plus a good young player for Luongo. From anyone, including Lord Irk.
What will the Leafs do?
Stay put in draft and sign Josh Harding - 30% likely
Stay put in draft and spin Reimer as the real deal - 30%
Trade assets to move up in draft - 30%
Trade Reimer and a fringe NHL er (like Kadri) for Luongo - 10%
Nash - 0%

I think Harding (when injury free) can be very capable between the pipes...

If The Leafs hadn't traded Tuukka Rask to Boston, he'd have been their man too............. so were goalies like Allan Bester, Mike Palmateer, Ken Wregget, Curtis Joseph, etc. etc. etc.
