Soriano: Wrigley boos unfair

07:14 AM ET 06.17 | Alfonso Soriano has been booed many times at Wrigley Field but maybe never as strongly as Saturday night when seemingly every one of 40,766 in attendance seemed to voice their displeasure. With runners on first and second and two outs in the sixth inning against the Red Sox, Soriano hit a line drive to third baseman Will Middlebrooks. Soriano put his head down and didn't run to first base so even though Middlebrooks dropped the ball, Soriano was an easy out. But the Cubs had an entirely different take and strongly backed Soriano. "It's one of those things where 100 percent of every player in the history of baseball would do the same thing," manager Dale Sveum said. "(The booing) is not fair because I hit a line drive to his glove," Soriano said. "I'm happy my teammates, manager and coaches support me because they know that I'm working hard to be a better player and a better teammate. It's not fair."

Unwritten rule in baseball hustle on and off the field run every play out and you will never shame yourself.

Uh, this just isn't true. They should also be booing Sveum as he appears to be an enabling idiot.

I don't think a change of scenery will rejuvenate this guy.

It isn't personal, he has to understand that they are not booing him, they are booing everything he stands for.

I think Cub fans need to celebrate Alphonse as the face of the team. He leads the team in RBI, is tied for the club lead in homers, and has more than twice as many walks as Starlin Castro. As one Cub fan on the Chicago Tribune's fan forum pointed out, Fonzie is on pace to hit 30 homers and 102 RBI! The fans should start calling Soriano Mr. Wrigleyville.
Sveum was right when he said 100 per cent of all players wouldn't run out a line drive hit like that to the third baseman. Well, Cub players at least. I'm sure Theo's "How to Play Like a Cub" manual doesn't require star players to run out their outs. They have to save their energy for those 9th inning rallies that the Cubs have been good at this year. Soriano is the gem that Jed and Theo should build this team around!

Life is so unfair when you're only making 18 million a year.

I agree that Soriano is their best player and recently showed up improved. But it does look no good if you don't hassle - take a page from Mr H Ramirez' book

Boo hoo hoo. You're 36 years old, have had decreasing value since the year after the Cubs signed you, and you're still getting your panties in a wad over being booed? Do yourself and everyone else in this baseball loving world a favor and just retire already. You have ~2 years left on your contract. Trust me, it ain't gonna be pretty!

June 18, 2012  01:19 PM ET

if this guy didn't make so many dumb plays then people wouldn't react the way they did. the guy has such a low baseball iq it's kind of painful to watch.

The Cubs have made the playoffs twice (2007,2008 ) within the last 6 years. Check your math and, or your facts before trash talking

Sveum just guaranteed he'll be out of a job by the end of next season.

Being the best player on a bad team isn't something you should celebrate.
