Consultant: Politics cost Chicago Super Bowls

08:46 AM ET 06.17 | Most longtime Bears fans think their team should have won more than one Super Bowl by now. Marc Ganis, president of the Chicago-based consulting firm SportsCorp Ltd., tells me Chicago should have been host to multiple Super Bowls by now if the idea of a domed stadium hadn't been treated like a political football. "Had Chicago and Illinois built the McDome (in 1996), the original domed stadium planned for next to McCormick Place, I suspect we would have had at least two Super Bowls already," Ganis said. "It was extremely short-sighted; it was extremely narrow focus. -- It would have cost (less than what it eventually) cost simply to upgrade Soldier Field. It would have been a terrific financial and tourism boost for the city." The reported estimated cost was $500 million. The cost for renovating Soldier Field in 2002-03 was $680 million, according to Ganis, and the capacity was reduced to a league-low 61,500. A domed stadium also might have attracted NCAA Final Fours and other events of national significance. "You have a Republican governor (James Edgar) and a Democratic mayor (Richard M. Daley). (They) didn't always see eye-to-eye, especially on McCormick Place," Ganis said. "There was always this issue that McCormick Place was jointly controlled (by the city and state), but the park district was controlled by City Hall entirely. That turf battle was the key reason the McDome plan didn't go forward."

I don't think you can wholly blame politics on this. I do blame the NFL's long-time requirement of a domed stadium for SuperBowls though. The history and sentiment tied to stadiums is as much a part of the team as anything else and the demise of Soldier Field before its time isn't worth cowtowing to the corporate mentality.

Maybe they could have hosted one Super Bowl with a dome. But not two within a 16-year window.

Of the first 49 Super Bowls, both scheduled and played (that's including the 2014 SB scheduled for NJ), only five have been given to northern US cities:

- 1982 Detroit (Super Bowl XVI)
- 1992 Minnesota (Super Bowl XXVI)
- 2006 Detroit (Super Bowl XL)
- 2012 Indianapolis (Super Bowl XLVI)
- 2014 New Jersey (Super Bowl XLVIII)

Detroit is the only northern city that was able to host two, and there was a 24-year gap between those games.

Morning Un.

Yep, when the NFL decided to focus less on the game and more on marketing the game, the cold weather cities lost out. The south just doesn't know how to properly tailgate in cold weather.

I haven't golfed in quite a while. Maybe when I finish up with school I'll consider it again. Just don't have the time to commit to it. If I can get out with a non-competitive group and just enjoy losing balls in the trees/water or anywhere else, then I'm good.

My dad is a scratch golfer and plays in amateur events. I learned the game from him and really enjoy it.

I started playing while stationed in Hawaii. If you're gonna learn, I think that's the place to catch the golf bug. Don't think I've ever hit under 100 but like I said, I just enjoy the time outside.

How bout we quit treating football like some candy **** sport and have in Chicago where the weather should affect the game. I would love to see a snowy superbowl.
