Enormous risk in Bobcats' hire

08:11 AM ET 06.19 | Mike Dunlap has served as an assistant at Southern California, Loyola Marymount, Denver (with the Nuggets), Oregon, Arizona St. John's. And now he's a head coach in the NBA. There are only two reasons to hire Dunlap. The first is that he came cheap. ... But this can't be about money, not now. Michael Jordan's Bobcats won seven games in 2011-12 and had the worst winning percentage in NBA history. If Dunlap is a dollar-store hire, then next season they deserve to win six. The Bobcats are a desperate franchise that desperately needs a teacher with the patience to develop and lead young talent. This is the only reason to hire Dunlap. ... But Dunlap is an enormous gamble. If they had not hired him as head coach, who would have?

Jordan's showing his fierce competitive prowess again. He's trying that much harder to get next season's #1 draft pick.

Listening to sports talk radio this morning the fans seem to be split 50/50..
There is the rational fan base who realizes this wasnt an attractive job and to pay Brian Shaw (another unproven coach) $7million a year wouldnt be wise. Given the fact that this is Rich Cho's pick and not MJ, Bickerstaff, Higgins or any of the other jokers they've had running basketball ops, ppl seem to be willing to trust his judgment. I'm sure the fans in SA were asking themselves 'Who is Greg Popovich' when he got hired too....Remember no coach is great until they prove it. Phil Jackson wasnt Phil Jackson until he started winning so lets keep that in mind also
Then--you have the other side of the fan base who feel that with the colossal failures of MJ and front office (pre-Cho era) that they dont deserve the benefit of the doubt on this one...So there are good arguments to be made on both sides.
I personally feel like Shaw intentionally priced himself out of a job. Just bc he coached under Phil..what does that mean? How well have the other assistants under Phil done when given the shot? Exactly..Sure we don't know much about this guy but right now its important to have someone who truly wants the job and his track record of coaching young players should be valuable to this team. Plus if guys like Andy Katz, George Karl, Lute Olsen, Steve Lavin and those types are coming out publicly praising him he cant be that bad...we shall see

Except Pops was an assistant to Larry Brown in SA from 1988 to 1992, and was hired back to the Spurs in 1994 as GM, and installed himself as head coach two years later.
Spurs fans already were already familiar with him.

I think you're being too cruel. Jordan and his coaching pick have a great chance of winning 8 games next year...........if the breaks go their way.

I'm still hurting from MJ selecting Adam Morrison. Was there anything about Morrison that looked like he would be successful in the NBA? Spindly arms. Inability to post up. Pale. Thin and unathletic appearing. Looking at the NBA playoffs, does it appear that Morrison could compete in any way with quality NBA players? No, there is not, but MJ selected him third overall a few years ago. Why? Because MJ cannot evaluate talent. Didn't MJ also pick Kwame Brown #1 overall a few years ago, too. Yes, he did. I love you MJ, but your NBA team management skills suck.

Man, maybe Dunlap turns out to be outstanding, but on the face of it, this looks like MJ is so completely deluded and addled that it's frightening. Magic and Larry must shake their heads in pity.
