Pressure dialed even higher on Lincecum

08:21 AM ET 06.20 | The extent to which Barry Zito struggles will also have a cascading effect on the Giants staff, particularly another expensive and somewhat embattled arm. You could say the pressure is on [Zito], now that his positive momentum is gone and he has a 10.67 ERA while getting hammered in three consecutive losses. But the pressure is even higher on Tim Lincecum now. The Giants simply can't afford to caddy for their ace in nine consecutive losses when they're also handicapped with a struggling Zito in the rotation. If that wasn't already obvious, it became crystal clear after Zito gave up eight earned runs in 3 1/3 innings of a 12-5 loss at Angel Stadium Tuesday night.

The Zito contract has to be the worst ever given to a player.

June 20, 2012  10:43 AM ET

The paper thinks the Giants are out of it instead they are right in the middle of the wild card race. They just need to keep paying Zito and forget he is on the team.

Mike Hampton...

And why are they hating on Zito? They still having delusions about him being what he was in Oakland?

June 20, 2012  03:30 PM ET

Zito and Hampton are bad bu Vernon Wells' contract takes the cake

June 20, 2012  03:32 PM ET

From December 2006 - Center fielder Vernon Wells agreed Friday night to a seven-year, $126 million contract extension with the Toronto Blue Jays.

The commissioner's office and players union approved the deal Saturday, and the Blue Jays announced the extension Monday.

Wells' pact, the sixth-largest in baseball history, would give him a $25.5 million signing bonus, no-trade clause and guarantee him the right to opt out of his contract after four years. In addition, he could earn bonuses of $250,000 for MVP, $200,000 for World Series MVP, $150,000 for league championship series MVP and $100,000 for receiving the most votes in his league in All-Star game balloting.

Right now the Carl Crawford contract looks much worse. Of course, he could come back and change that.

June 20, 2012  07:35 PM ET

The Jayson Werth contract is looking very bad too. Jury still out, but the guy is already 33 and has 5 more years at $18M/yr after this one.

June 20, 2012  07:46 PM ET

Barry Zito sucks, Mike Hampton sucks, Vernon Wells sucks, Queen and Bowie are OK and Megadeth rules ;]

June 20, 2012  07:48 PM ET

Where are my Cubbie threads??? Aren't there any peeps out there inquiring as to what the brilliant, I say brilliant mind, of Theo Einstein is up to???

June 20, 2012  07:48 PM ET

Why is Ryne Sandberg not managing the Chicago Cubs???

I am officially hijacking this thread ... humor me.

June 20, 2012  07:58 PM ET

If you want to talk Cubs and bad contracts, there are the Soriano and Zambrano contracts.

See the Kevin Brown contract, the Mike Hampton contract, the Carl Crawford contract, the Jayson Werth contract. In the NBA, see the Gilbert Arenas contract. Or the Rashard Lewis contract.
The Zito contract is bad, very bad in fact. But let's clear. There are many many bad contracts given to players who immediately after become very unproductive. At best, Zito has lots of "competition" for the award of worst contract ever given to a player. Just my opinion. If you disagree or want to mention other players with terrible contracts, please mention them.
