Burke might have to move Gardiner

08:32 AM ET 06.20 | 'Tis the season for Brian Burke to make a headline. If [Burke] is serious about making a splash this week with a big trade, he is going to have to think long and hard about parting with defenceman Jake Gardiner. That's the feeling of several National Hockey League scouts who have had more than a few looks at the Leafs' group of prospects, whether it's with the big club, the Marlies, or at the junior or collegiate level. And if the Leafs put a lot of stock in their young group, it's clear that not every one agrees that Toronto is brimming with bluechip youngsters. "Gardiner would be the top guy," a Western Conference scout said. "Two or three years ago, I would have said Luke Schenn. But he has not made that next step."

He won't part with Gardiner, if he feels he has chance of signing the Schultz kid when he becomes a FA July 1, because of the Wisconsin Badger connection.

In a situation like Toronto where the fans have become accustomed to mediocrity, why not just develop the team through the draft? I mean its not like the fans are demanding a Cup next year.

It's going to have be something crazy like Gardiner, Kadri and 5th overall for 1st. Then the Oilers could draft Forsberg or Grigorenko if they're available (or Reinhart) then sign Schultz to pair with Gardiner. I still think Yakupov has more upside that Gardiner but the Oilers need that PP quarterback too.

IF that is what EDM would want, then by all means, go ahead keep #1 and choke on Yakupov who will realize after one season that Edmonton is Siberia, just in English. Nail will be in the KHL within 3 years of being drafted. Book it, Danno.
Which BTW is why TOR does NOT want the #1 pick, nor will they draft any of the top-rated Russians.
Even Burkie knows that if he drafts a Russian, he will have to post security at the gentlemen's clubs out by Pearson. Since that is where most of the Russian talent is in the GTA.

And herein lies the conundrum. Of course they should be preparing for 2-3 years of tanking, the way they SHOULD have done starting in 2008. Of course this team has needs they simply will not get in the FA/trade market. Plain and simple.
The problem, as I see it, is that Brian Burke is fighting for his job, and his job, as far as a non-insider can see, is to make the playoffs this season. Unless he has made some deal with MLSE, a la Brian Colangelo, to stick around for a few years for a full-out rebuild, he's likely gone by season's end if(when) they don't finish in the top 8.
After what fans went through this past season, three or four more years of being a joke would have very little effect on our psyche. To be honest, hockey sense dictated that Burke should've been gone at the same time Wilson was. He gave it a shot. It didn't work. You move on. Unfortunately that message was never learned by Peddie Inc. and now we're just prolonging the inevitable.

Not letting Gardner go. If they can sign Schultz... that would be a HUGE building block. Use the draft pick and keep the current program of developing their own - DON'T look for the quick fix like every other GM has done in T.O for the last lifetime!

Lake Placid was the only movie I liked about hockey, the kids against the Russkies. There has been some good documentarys on the Bullies, there's only one Dave Schultz
