White Sox owe more to fans

08:15 AM ET 06.21 | Ken Williams intimated earlier this week that the White Sox currently lack the kind of turnstile action that might allow them to behave like a big-market club. Williams reminded us Monday how financial constraints tied to attendance woes will dictate how aggressive he can be pursuing players the Sox need. "I don't want to do it, but yes (it's still an issue)," Williams said. He wasn't whining but merely following the long-held policy of Chairman Jerry Reinsdorf. ... Reinsdorf, through Williams, basically is threatening fans that the Sox won't get more competitive with a trade for an expensive pitcher such as Ryan Dempster unless they support that idea by buying more tickets. How many restaurateurs vow to improve the food only when the dining room is busier?

They draw good enough when they win. They win when the GM makes good decisions.

Williams I don't think the Sox fans just got off the bus. Everyone knows you make a trade the players is under contract and has no say on coming to your team stupid.

Even during the 2005 season, when the White Sox were in first place for a majority of the year, fans did not start showing up in droves until September. Also, this year they've been in first for a bit and are now in second. No one cares. The White Sox fan base doesn't care, so why should ownership?

The White Sox are Chicago's step-child, no doubt about it. In every way.
Just make your team better...then hope the fans will come.

In every way? So you're saying the quality of baseball the White Sox play is inferior to that of the Cubs?

they say this every year, especially around the trade deadline. it hasn't stopped them from making deals. They said the same thing before the Rios and Peavy trades. if KW finds a deal where the player is right and the $ is high, Reinsdorf would sign off on it. nonstory.

The only difference being this year, they have no prospects worth trading and no wiggle room to add the salary of expensive veterans. The last time the White Sox were in the playoffs was 2008. Every year, like you said, KW will go out and bring in somebody he thinks will push his team through to the playoffs. It hasn't been working. They need to acquire prospects now, despite being .5 games back in a horribly weak division.

The Cell is not a tourist attraction like Wrigley so the Sox have to actually play good baseball to get people to show up. Sox fans (like myself) are just not convinced about this team. Beyond Sale and Peavy (and maybe Quintana) the starting rotation is shaky at best. The closer situation is slightly better than last year when Santos needed a 2-3 run lead of a cushion in order to get a save.

Unfortunately, no matter how successful the Sox are, a short winning streak by the Cubs will always shift the city's attention to the north. Chicago belongs to the CUBS!
Always has, always will. Good luck White Sox. GO CUBBIES!
