Shero trying to drive up Staal's price?

08:27 AM ET 06.21 | Though the numbers suggest keeping Sidney Crosby, Evgeni Malkin, who was awarded the Hart Trophy Wednesday night, and Jordan Staal together through their prime years will be almost impossible, GM Ray Shero sang a different tune earlier this week. Shero didn't get into specifics but made his intentions clear. Teams are inquiring daily about Staal, Shero said, but he remains uninterested in any offer. ... "I don't want to trade Jordan. I'm not listening to offers. I want Jordan here. I want him here for a long time, and that's what I'm going to try to do." There is still the possibility Staal could be available at some point this summer. Shero's on-the-record desire to sign him could also be a tactic used to increase possible trade value.

I think Shero should try to keep Staal here. Not sure of his tactics, but Shero's a decent GM.
Regardless, I think Malkin is going to be the one too expensive to keep. But we shall see.

I don't think he can afford to lose Malkin as much as he can Staal.

I think he should keep him as well. And give Crosby and Malkin huge contracts to fill up all the cap space and leave the D as it is.

agree, plus the return on Staal could be quite high..

of course the proverbial 'x-factor' is that Crosby remains one hard hit away from having to miss even more games, so losing Staal quickly kills the good depth at center if Crosby was injured

My guess (and that isn't worth squat) is that Shero will try to keep all three. Not sure how, etc., but he is going to give it his best shot.

You may be right DWI... then again you have Sid as well talking contract as well... I don't think they can keep all three.
I know you're going to disagree but if I can only keep 2 of the 3.... I keep Malkin and Staal.
Sid would have to take short term home town discount only because of his health issues.
Say what you want but he's one good hit from retirement....do you gamble a long term contract on that?

Agreed. Lock all 3 up for max contracts.

Completely agree with you. Too much of a question mark on Sid's health.
Staal is entering the last year of his contract so Shero still has time to work things out. Also the cap may go up or completely disappear under the new CBA. If Shero does move one of the big three it won't be until after he knows what the new rules will look like.

Good points all.
Look, I understand you all speak from more of an objective point of view.
That being said, Crosby isn't going anywhere. They will sign him soon. Shero has said as much. And as I have said, he is a CASH COW for this franchise/City, etc. Crosby wants to stay. He is going to stay, and I bet for the rumored, 10 years for 90 million. He gets hurt where he should not come back, he will retire, and considering his age when signing the contract, it will free up the cap space.
That all being said, that is why it is imperative for Shero not to let Malkin and Staal go, if possible.
But there is no way in hell Crosby is going anywhere whether people disagree or not. All players could be "one hit away." Sure Crosby is more vulnerable, or Crosby could play his **** off for the next 10 years. Considering his drive, determination, etc., etc., Shero is counting on the latter.

Except for the Crosby contract won't get insured, so the Penguins know they would be on the hook for it completely, no matter what. That's a big game

by the way...I just want to say that the NHL is never going to get respect if it keeps allowing stuff like this (what follows) to happen;
Last night, after a very busy day, I went onto the SI webiste to se who won all the awards. So the main stories are Malkin, Lunqvist, etc. It then, at the end, lists the rest. Now, we hockey fans are for the most part...fond of the heritage. Well, Steve Stamkos won the, 'Maurice Rashard" trophy, according to the article. Really?
Can you imagine if some baseball hack had written that so and so won the "Ty Young" award?
Sorry about the hijacking...i was really p'o'd though

Anyone see Hottie Henrik last night? Whoa!!! ;)
BTW, if Canuck is around and can find the skit they did making fun of Shanny = not bad for the NHL awards which are normally appalling!
