How a billboard became an NCAA violation

08:25 AM ET 06.22 | A Mississippi State billboard campaign featuring the slogan "Play with the Best," along with a picture of football players, didn't have the intended effect. The MSU compliance department, in a Feb. 3 letter to the SEC, reported that the billboards were "developed" contrary to NCAA bylaws. The violation was "discovered" after school officials saw media reports about the billboards, including a story in the Daily Journal quoting Chad Thomas, MSU's assistant athletics director for marketing. ... [Thomas] said it was a recruiting tool and that the football office had input on where to put the billboards, which also appeared in Aberdeen, Biloxi, Clinton and Morton. That violated NCAA bylaw 13.4.3.1.

Moo State just cannot get their recruiting straight. First, they bungle $Cam and lose him to Aubie, and now they are in trouble because they are recruiting every vehicle occupant driving on the roadways of Mississippi 24-7, which is apparently an NCAA no-no.

WTFjj is going on, D2?

Should have used a picture of the men's chess club.

A billboard is a recruiting tool but LHN is not?
Hmmmmmm.

I wonder if Tennessee ever took down the Lane Kiffin billboards they set up in several big cities in FL. If not, I'm sure the NCAA will penalize USC (left) for it.

Gotacha...."Play with the Best" must be considered false advertising when applied to MSU football. ;)

Mississippi State plays bama, LSU, and Arkansas every year. That counts as "playing with the best".

NCAA has to many stupid rulesand this is rule #13.4.3.1 .....I don't think this would give them any compettive edge on the field or off the field.

These billboards were put up by Tech all over DFW last year. Having pictures of the team is the violation...

The TT one has no connotation of sports recruiting as it's intent, at least IMO. Moo State's was pretty blatantly sports recruiting oriented.

Does anyone know more facts about the bilboard? Is the player pictured actually a current student athlete? If so, that could be the violation.
