08:34 AM ET 06.22 | Penguins center Jordan Staal has reportedly rejected a long-term offer to remain in Pittsburgh, and the team and is leaning toward becoming an unrestricted free agent next summer. The Penguins' offer was for 10 years. Financial terms were not disclosed. Staal, who is entering the final year a four-year contract worth $16 million, has not ruled out remaining with the Penguins but has told team officials he is open to signing with Carolina if a trade can be made. ... Staal's older brother, Eric, is the Hurricanes' top center and captain, and Jordan Staal is intrigued by the idea of playing with his brother in Carolina, where their parents now spend the majority of their time. Younger brother Jared Staal is a prospect in the Hurricanes' system.

It's hard to keep a championship caliber team together. A player of Staal's talent and production not likely to stay a third line center. On top of that there is the salary cap that the teams have to deal with

TSN reported it was 6-years, $60 million.

So clearly he doesn't care about the finances. It appears he wants a bigger role, and to get out of the spot light of Malkin and Crosby. And he it also appears he wants to play with one of his brothers.

he has another brother you know. let the 'Canes have their two, let this one come here to play with Marc!

Time for the Leafs to trade the #5 pick for Jared Staal. Obviously, the Canes will do it.

Then give him a 10-year contract, and guarantee him a job in the NHL.

That way, Jordan would want to come to Toronto, and Eric and Marc will soon follow by demanding trades to Toronto. In demanding trades, the Leafs could trade 6th and 7th rounders to Carolina and New York to get them.

It is a flawless plan. Now do it Toronto!

You mean 10 yr 60 mil. That's what I read last night.

Or maybe the Rangers deal Marc Staal to the Hurricanes.

Sather is crazy, and with him falling to 3rd in the depth charts, they may consider moving him to open up more space for someone like Parise or maybe even Suter. Or they could move him for some scoring, something like Skinner for Marc Staal and some picks and prospects or a guy like Hagelin or Anisimov that they then move to get Jordan.

That way, no Staal can ever give another a concussion.

Yeah, that is what I mean.

I guess the Pens have a better idea as to what his motives are now.

This is what I am hearing from our local media, and apparently it could happen tonight?

Staal for Sutter, and we get Carolina's pick. I hate the thought of losing Staal, but if he insists on leaving, and going to Carolina anyway, take it Shero, take it.

He goes to Free Agency, we get? Nadda.

I don't think it is about the money with Staal. He is getting married tonight. He will start (no doubt) a family soon thereafter. I think he wants to play with his brother(s), be a 2nd line Center, etc. It isn't personal, and again, if it is not going to be any other way...

Agree about Staal wanting his own spotlight... I bet if he was slated as a #1 center on whichever team, he would pass on playing with his brother...

exactly, the value is there now, plus it would be a distraction the whole season

And he deserves it, no doubt. I am a fan that thinks he should go. I am selfish. I want all three here, but that is not realistic. He had 50 pts last season. Strike while the iron is hot. Not sure if it is a "fair trade," if what I am hearing is true, but I could not wish anything but great things for J. Staal no matter what happens.

If that' the deal I hope Shero takes it.

I can understand him wanting to get out of Pittsburgh and out from the shadows of Geno and Sid. He may be looking at how well Talbot did with the Flyers last year and realized how his talents are being underutilized.

Seems like a fair trade. Sutter is one of the top 3rd line centres in the game, and is great defensively, so the Pens don't see a massive drop off. While the Canes finally get a 2nd line centre and another scoring threat.

He would look great between Kessel and Lupul ;)

I'm guessing Marc's been shooting texts to his brothers that read like this:

"John Tortorella is the #*!*#($* devil."

On a plane out of town, with only Staal and Lupul coming back.

I don't think anyone would look good on the same line as Kessel.

I don't think it's about the shadows of Geno and Sid, sounds like he wants to be around his family. Losing the 3 center model will change the dynamic of this team, and probably for the better since they have won 1 playoff series since the Cup in 09. If only they could package Kennedy and Martin in with him...

BF and DWI are right...and Shero knows his sheet...I'd say pull the trigger on this deal and it's a win/win deal because like DWI said...he gets to free agent and you get the big zero
